As far as I know,  they grow when they absorb things around them but also decrease in mass when there's nothing around them and they just disappear, in that case where did all the matter that it "absorbed" go?

They supposibly shrink over extremely long periods of time (trillions of years) thru Hawking radiation.

 

I haven't heard anything about them shrinking because the matter they swallowed up is gone.
