Sudan looks set to outlaw female genital mutilation (FGM), in a significant move welcomed by campaigners.

Anyone found carrying out FGM will face up to three years in prison, according to a document seen by the Guardian.

The council of ministers approved the new law on 22 April, but it still needs to be passed by members of the sovereign council, which was created following the ousting of former dictator Omar al-Bashir.

Amira Azhary, from the National Council for Child Welfare and a campaigner for the Saleema initiative, which campaigns for an end to the practice, said: “We expect that the law will be passed by the sovereign council and if that happens, it will be an expression of the political will in this country.”

Well done, a tinsy tiny little bit overdue, but good for them for making strides when it comes to human rights, maybe they'll even outlaw the death penalty for the gays in a few decades :enigma:

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!

We just need to end male genital mutilation

Like, sure, it shouldn't be a thing either but let's not compare that with FGM :smh:

I am because people barely ever talk about it and it's still seen as acceptable and normal to billions of people. No baby boy should ever be mutilated at birth, it's a choice they should make when they're an adult. We have so many men victims of it and can never undo that change. It IS just as bad, because we're told it's normal.

Like, I agree it shouldn't be a thing and people should talk about it but the reasons behind it are not as disgusting as female genital mutilation. For starters, circumcised men can still enjoy sex and have fully functioning genitals while women who are mutilated basically have that happen to them to take away the possibility of pleasure from them and, depending on the degree of mutilation, it can seriously **** up their day to day lives. It stems from extreme sexism, while circumcision comes from religion or supposedly hygienic reasons (which are still not valid reasons obviously).

I'm not comparing which is worse , I'm just stating babies shouldn't have their private parts mutilated without consent. We can all agree on that. And it shouldn't be looked at as normal.

Ok, yeah. I definitely agree with that. Except for a few cases where it's kind of necessary, it shouldn't be done at all
