Off topic but how easy is it to get Sims 1 working on a fairly new PC? Will it work on Windows10?

Really easy! You can download Sims 1 and Sims 2 for free on oldgamesdownload.com. (Because it's old enough to be considered "abandonware" this site is legal? I think lol) I've never dowlnladed TS1 from that website but I've installed TS2 from there very recently and it was easy to install and runs well (no need for a weird subfolder or "running as an administrator" or anything lame like that)

My old cat is a tough man, but i cant deny the way he bites my hand and he stabs me, he grabs me by my heart <3

just to jump on this (I still play sims 1 on my windows 10) there's a couple sites still running for downloadable items like SimSlice, Simlogical etc.  if you wanted the rejuvenation chambers or transportation stuff

I'd say TS3. 2 was great and it allowed some great gameplay, although load screens were terrible and the building tools were not the best. 4 is cool, but it lacked some very basic features in the beginning, and in some aspects it felt like a step backward. Overall I feel like 3 is the most well-rounded experience.
