In the Sumida Aquarium of Tokyo, garden eels are forgetting about humans. And that's not a good thing. Outside of staff, without droves of humans to gawk at the creatures, they're returning to their habits they had in the wild. Which, considering the environment they are in, wouldn't be effective and cause great stress.

So, users of Apple products are invited to FaceTime the eels. The event is called Chinanago Face Show Festival and will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from 3 to 5 May.

Just call up one of these addresses and you may see eels.

Without humans constantly visiting them, their habits are changing. They're already hiding from people more often, instead of simply looking out of their holes.

The lack of interaction is also changing how they act with each other.

So this can be seen as corrective action. Because they can't be acting like that while in an aquarium.

Basically, tl;dr the aquarium owners want the eels to continue acting like they're in an aquarium. For the eels and the aquarium's sake.

Brain vomit:

How about we let them live their lives in the ocean :'( I used to love Aquariums and zoos as a kid and I do think it is important to instill a love of animals in kids and the easiest way to do it is to take your kids to an aquarium or zoo but it is inhuman to be honest. Zoos and aquariums should exist I guess but do we really need as many as we have and do we really need THAT many animals in them? ugh I'm conflicted.

It's not like we can release everything back into the wild. A lot of the animals in zoos and aquariums have been born and bred that way. And not every zoo or aquarium is a rehabilitation program.

I'm not sure. But I don't think we capture wild animals for zoos. At least, not anymore.

Plus it's entirely possible that some species could be preserved only through the care of zoos.

I mean, I get your point. And it is conflicting.

I prefer taking kids to places like Bays Mountain. It's not a zoo, but a park that has animal exhibits. Not to mention wild animals wonder into the park.

That exactly why I don't think we should close them all. As I mentioned I think we need to limit the amount of them but not close them all.

They are helpful because they aid in the preservation of many species that are going extinct in the wild and of course I don't mean we should let loose all the animals in zoos. I mean we should at a certain point stop adding new additions to zoos (unless it is for preservation purposes or if the animals are actually born there).

I never heard of this concept you mentioned but it sounds like fun and a lot healthier and positive imo! I hope we have more of that instead of aquariums and zoos in the future! I do appreciate everything I learned thanks to zoos and aquariums and I'll never forget my experiences visiting them (especially as a child) but now I think is the time we as a species look for alternatives and the one you mentioned sounds great!

That said zoos are of course still needed. We just need to limit them I think.
