I shared this tweet because I post about stuff like this regularly. I don't have an agenda against De Blasio. That's preposterous.

You made a post without any context, making it seem like De Blasio was this person targeting Jewish community out of nowhere, not even mentioning there was a funeral with 2,500+ Jewish people closely gathered that he PERSONALLY went out to disperse

There have been several Hasidic Jewish funerals in Brooklyn over the past few weeks, including at least two others on Sunday which drew crowds of mourners. There have also been several Hasidic weddings that drew big crowds. 

These events have continued despite New York's Orthodox Jewish communities being hit particularly hard by the virus, with some in Brooklyn reporting hundreds of cases. City data show that a zip code in Borough Park, a neighborhood with a large Hasidic community, has Brooklyn's highest rate of confirmed infections. 

Federal guidelines say people should stay at least six feet apart in public, and there should be no gatherings of more than 10 people. 

Cuomo announced Monday that he is raising the maximum fine for social distancing violations to $1,000.

"It's not about your life," he said in his daily coronavirus press briefing. "You don't have the right to risk someone else's life. You don't have the right, frankly, to take health care staff and people who are literally putting their lives on the line and be cavalier or reckless with them."

And he stressed that religion was no excuse. "I don't care if you're Orthodox Jews, Catholic, Christian. It's not about religion. What right do you have to act irresponsibly? None of us has the right to be reckless in our behavior."

 

I completely agree with Cuomo. This group of people are ignoring all guidelines in the worst hot spot in the US. They need to be shut down and held accountable for their actions, when they don’t follow social distancing guidelines.

He said "Jews" as if every single jewish person was doing that. So. Not. True.

That is like me saying "ok because all of these mid-western Christian came out to protest, I am going to call out all Christians". At least the community in New York was doing something understandable, not protesting for no reason like the mid-west states.

Anti-semitism is no joke. While I am not saying he is one, he defiantly can encourage anti-Semites to be more vocal. When dealing with such a sensitive subject, he should know better than to say that. There are many people who will find any reason to attack Jewish people, and he gave them one. 

A better way to have worded it would be to say "gathering for large funerals". You don't have to mention the religious aspect at all and you only single out the people participating in the funeral, not an entire community.

Not to mention his apology was so bad: "So I regret if the way I said it in any way gave people a feeling of being treated the wrong way. That was not my intention. It was said with love, but it was tough love". He didn't realize how harmful his words could be.

He didn't apologize for how it was said, he apologized if someone was offended. I do not think he learned from this.

Again, I am not saying he is anti-semitic, it is just that he needs to be a lot more careful when doing things like this. You can't blame an entire community for actions of a small sect of that community. Especially considering, while I am not condoning it, it was a funeral, not a protest.

On a lighter note, Governor Cuomo is doing an amazing job in NY. People should take notice.

But it wasn't a "minority group" that did it. It was a small sect of a heavily persecuted minority group.

Instead of targeting his statement at that small group, he did it to an entire community. There is a big difference.

His language could give anti-semites reasons to baselessly attack Jewish people.
