  1. 1. Which line is Gaga’s messiest?

    • Love it when you call me legs, in the morning buy me eggs
    • I know that mom and dad think I’m a mess but it’s alright because I am rich as piss.
    • Slap honey on a young pancake, we know how to make that money.
    • I guess sir, if you say so, some of us just like to read.
    • You’re black, white, beige, chola descent You’re Lebanese, you’re orient.
    • (the entirety of Hair)
    • Love me, love me, please retweet.
    • Judas kiss me if offenced or wear ear condom next time.
    • I, I feel good, I walk alone then I trip over myself and I fall, I, I stand up and then im okay.
    • And if you say you're okay, I'm gonna heal you anyway.

Why is Hair on here? It's one of her most powerful songs! But I choose the first one, all of the others need to be in the bible!

You forgot this gem:

Why do you look so good in those jeans?
Why'd you come around me with an ass like that?
You're making all my thoughts obscene

I have always thought that the Applause lyrics are related to the "putting art in front of pop" idea. I think she's talking about prior times, when art was always in front, but now pop culture has somehow taken over everything and art was left behind. She feels nostalgic about the times when art was the priority, and people often judge her for it (art police tweet teas), so she tells them that she knows they call her a "geek" for feeling that way, and she is ok with it because she "just likes to read", like using the idea of being a geek to explain that she misses those times when art was put first and feeling "superior" or "ahead" for understanding that art must always come first when you are an artist.

It's kinda hard for me to explain it, let me know if you don't get what I'm saying so I can try again, hahaha.

I love and appreciate this explanation :runhug: Thank you!

chola/orient lyrics and also gypsy because they’re considered offensive terms and its a little tone deaf.

I always thought “even prophets forgave his goofy way” was messy af. i always thought it was “broken way” until I checked the booklet and i just choose to ear it instead because like... goofy? tf

Also the Hair slander is blasphemy :grr:

God Control

I feel like Gaga’s pinnacle of great lyrics was the entirety of The Fame Monster plus ARTPOP (the song), and Paparazzi and perhaps Joanne (the song), Shallow and Always Remember Us This Way.

Many tracks on Born This Way album (especially Hair), The Fame, ARTPOP and Joanne were quite primitive and weak, lyrically speaking. Now don’t get me wrong, those albums have some of my most favorite Gaga tracks, but the lyrics at times felt either too complex that it felt forced, like a word salad “wear an ear condom next time”, too childish (Hair and Bad Kids), or too cheap “I am rich as piss”.

Again, I love most of Gaga’s songs so much, include some of those with bad lyrics, but it’s just that I wish she actually didn’t try too hard to sound deep nor over-emphasize on the “kindness” message or the rebellious one. It could be done in a way that is more subtle and not seem like she’s deliberately trying to use big words or too teenage school kid terms.

Agree on Hair!

The Chola/Gypsy thing is interesting because in the context of the time, at least in the US, it was socially acceptable (I still cringed at Chola, but the term was pretty mainstream). I remember some beauty magazine even had a "chola make up tutorial" lol. Gypsy, too, in the US really only started to be seen as offensive a few years ago...I remember the Avengers cast got in some mild trouble in the UK because they described Scarlet Witch as a "Gypsy."

Orient was always dicey/tone deaf/offensive—to be fair, I doubt she realized it tho. But yeah, with 2020 glasses on looking back on the lyrics/style of 2000-2013 Fergie, Gwen Stefani, JLo, Gaga, Lana, Kesha, Rihanna & Coldplay, Pink!, and even some of Destiny Child's lyrics (I'm thinking of Nasty Girl)...whew, they'd all be in hot water today. For example, Lna had a song called Ghetto Baby that some British artist recorded.

IMO Joanne is a bit of a paradox...it has some of her most complex songwriting (Sinner's Prayer, Diamond Heart, etc.) and some of her messiest (John Wayne). LoveGame is fun, but the lyrics are ridiculous, messy and don't even really make sense.

Unpopular opinion, but I Like it Rough has some of her worst lyrics...great concept and melody but the lyrics are mostly a mess.
