Born This Way in 2021

As we all know, Gaga has always been ahead of her time with her art/music so I was wondering how you guys think Born This Way would do if it were released a decade later instead? With all the same released singles and promotional rollout too. On the album she sings about gender issues/immigration/lgbtq equality/religion and so many more relevant issues that are more highlighted now than were before. Do you think it'd get more acclaim or do you think it would've been panned?

Both the sound and the social messages would be seen as basic by now, imo. But that's honestly bc BTW was so influential in pop music when it came out, so its a tough question. :staymad:

It would sound a bit dated by today’s standards and the issues she’d have brought up would’ve already been known to the most of us, so the impact would still be there but diminished.

I think it would be good... but not as good as it was in 2011, because many popstars support the lgbtq community right now. That was rare 10 years ago.

Do u think we get a new edition because of the 10 years of born this way? 😍

Scheiße could have been the #MeToo feminism song we needed in 2018 :ohwell:

I didn't ask for a free ride, I only asked you to show me a real good time.

All it does is make me think people don't give her enough credit for BTW and what it did for pop culture.

It was perfectly timed.

For the song BTW, if it were released today with the exact lyrics, there would be some backlash/criticism over her use the the language Chola and Orient.

The album as a whole, I think it would have been far less impactful today than in 2011, she really took a lot of risks as we know well with these topics/issues.

I'm torn between this, and also that it might still be very relevant (just not as much), considering how, with at least American society, these issues keep slipping and sliding. Like, it wouldn't be as bold or revolutionary as it was in 2011, but it'd still be heavily relevant, unfortunately.

... that's, uh, not counting some of the more outdated lyrics LMAO

Do you mean specific lyrics, or more broader issues?

It came at exactly the right time. Pop music in 2011 still had that dramatic, campy, "performative" quality to it, so BTW fit right in. Music nowadays is manufactured for Spotify and TikTok. I don't think an album like BTW would do as well in this climate.

The Chola line already had criticism back in 2011!

Oh totally. I remember very well. I was embarrassed for her. If it were released today she would be ‘cancelled’ in 5 mins :awkney:

Honestly, I even cringe a bit when she performs the song now. Considering she’s going to be performing it until she dies, I feel like maybe she needs to replace it with something else...

I mean more of the overarking theme and the sound of the album, lyricly i think it would do okay today exept maybe bad kids. Government hooker would do great imo if she speed it up a bit
