Franch Toast

You're black, white, beige, chola descent
You're Lebanese, you're orient

-and, from the same song -

Lesbian, transgendered life
I'm on the right track baby
I was born to survive
No matter black, white or beige
Chola or orient made

I think songs in foreign languages definitely come across better in their own language because no matter how well it's translated, it always usually comes off sounding strange as it was written in the way that someone from another culture would talk, which is different to the rules in your language and so forth.

And nowhere is this more present than in the English translation of the Spanish song, Gordita (which means "little fat girl") by Shakira featuring Calle 15:

"Total perversion in the area, perverse as having sex in a funeral home."

"Shaki, you're so pretty, I also liked you when you were fatter."

"I also like it now, but when you lose your good manners, when you eat without cutlery like animals."

"Let's jump from the same bridge, not parachutes, out of our world, flying, like the hippies when they are smoking."

"I'm little Red Cap and you're the liar wolf."

"Invite me on a trip to the wild side where I don't have to use make up."

"Little boy, give me a rich kiss on my rich snout."

This is why I can only bop to it when I barely take the lyrics into account!

Not at all one of my faves by Lana and I wouldn't call it "great" but it's definitely at least good, but from Gods and Monsters by Lana (I was talking about this with @AyaKara last night):

- If I get a little prettier can I be your baby (I ****ing despise this lyric lmfao)

- (In the land of gods and monsters I was an angel) LIVING IN DA GARDEN OF EVOL!

- Life imitates art (I'm pretty ok with this one nowadays but mentioning it anyway tbh :selena:)

This is literally one of her best songs ever to my mind. Those are some of my favourite lines!

Like I can see why people like "Life imitates art" and I don't think I'd have a problem with "living in the garden of evil" if she sang it less intensely (can also see why people like it, but to me it just doesn't work) but I really "if I get a little prettier can I be your baby" there is like no way I will ever appreciate that lyric :smh:

"Life imitates art" is of course a common phrase but an accepted one. "I was an angel living in the garden of evil" is meant to be a clever irony. And Lana always sings lyrics that can be a bit eyebrow raising with anti-feminist principles as that's the nature of the character she's created and "if I get a little prettier, can I be your baby" just fits with that and it's even followed with "you tell me 'life isn't that hard.'" I just switch off my feminism when I listen to a lot of her music and realise I'm just listening to a character on a lot of songs. I love the way she passionately sings all these lines, it's meant to be sexy. I don't think I'll ever get tried of her singing: "In the land of god and monsters, I was an angel...looking to get f**ked hard." Best ironic line, one of the sexiest lines ever and my life story! :hor:

Yeah I get "life imitates art" and I know "I was an angel..." is a good lyric per se but it's the way she sings "living in the garden of evil" that makes it cringy to me lol. And with "if i get a little prettier" it's exactly that :smh: I can't turn it off (even though I somehow adore the song Ultraviolence), It's both it depending on her beauty and the use of "your baby", like I get it's a very Lana thing especially in the first two albums and I can see how it fits but I can't get over how bad it sounds to me :flop:. Oh I used to cringe at "looking to get ****ed hard" too but nowadays I agree :legend: it's iconic tbh

You beat me to it! She has so many Spanish songs translated to English that have suffered the same fate. They don't sound the same.

Yesterday I heard Hey, Soul Sister by Train for the first time in a while. Although I enjoy the song a lot, I can't stand one particular lyric because it make me cringe so hard.

The lyric in question: 'So gangsta, I'm so thug'. It makes me feel so uncomfortable :awkney: (at 2:25)

Do y'all have other examples of great songs with one cringy lyric that ruins the song a bit for you?

That LYRIC is what you find the most cringey out of all of them?!?! Lmaoooo the whole song is sooooo cringe :wtf:
