Could COVID-19 be a form of marketing??

Hi everyone!
I have a friend who is a fashion designer here in Houston, and he knows quite a few people and has a lot of connections in the fashion and beauty world.

I was asking him about the MAC x Selena drop times for Nordstrom and he connected me with a friend of his, whose dad is apparently, highly connected to the Richemont Group, which that group owns quite a few top luxury brands. This friend seems to know information about a lot of upcoming launches not released to the public as well.

I was able to find out the time and I brought up the fact that Macy's dropped the line the same day MAC did even though the MAC website stated otherwise. He mentioned how MAC gave them a date to launch but they launched when they wanted and didn't follow the MAC drop date.

So I casually brought up Haus Labs had dropped their new collection and then pulled it rather quickly.

He said that there were packets sent out about a month ago to social media teams and investors saying they would drop the launch and then pull it to create hype of the new products and use COVID-19 as an excuse. This was done to see how many people are interested in the products by social media postings to see what products would be best to sell.

Im not sure HOW true this is. So take it with a grain of salt. I'm only passing on word what was told to me.

With that in mind..could this also be a possible reason why Chromatica is pushed back?

Please no judgments...I just want to read peoples thoughts on the situation.

Using a pandemic as a marketing gimmick is really cringey

People with reliable connections to Gaga's team who have for several eras now confirmed that the album was coming early this year an entire year ago. So no. It was actually meant to come out on April 10th and was actually pulled so gaga would focus her energy elsewhere and also scramble to salvage her album rollout plan.

Thats what I mentioned to him, that the whole thing made no sense and thats what he had told me, it was to create hype on what might sell better.

I mean, at least some brands are doing this for sure. When there's so much uncertainty with everything going on it's understandable that any company or product will try to at least work with whats going on to the best of their advantage. In some cases that means full delays in others it means maybe using some of whats going on to market in a different way. it's not absurd and I dare say it's not as nefarious as it sounds.
