when The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder sang their songs, I don't think the world thought "oh look how selfishly they promote themselves"

They don't have the same message of these covers, that's why I think she didn't sing her songs

Off course they don't have the exact same message as Smile or The Prayer but they're in the same vein. You Can't Always Get What You Want or I'm Still Standing have different messages too. To say that she is ashamed is a total overreaction!

She personally didn’t find it appropriate, that’s fine. She also has a *strong* affinity for music history so I think that’s also an important part in her doing covers. It’s not that she hates her own stuff, it’s that she probably sees herself within the broader landscape of music and if I’m looking at the broader landscape, I think there are better songs for this occasion that Gaga’s. She probably thought the same.

Also as an event organizer and such she’s in a different position than Billy Joe Armstrong or The Stones. I think given her position in the event, a cover was most suitable. Plus, Gaga loves singing music in general so covers are going to very much be a thing.

I'm glad she didn't perform her own songs! She's not trying to get people to buy her music :laughga:

Yes, I remember them :) And it's interesting to notice that back then, she used to sings her own songs a lot more often, even in big events.

In 2009 she sang Speechless in front of the Queen. If that performance was set nowadays, she would sing a cover.

But she did MR not 5 years ago...I think the point is that she still sings her songs at important events lol just not all of them.

Other people might have sung their own songs but they didn't organize that whole event. It obviously come off a lot different when someone organizes an event like that and then uses it to promote their music.

The rolling stones eg are legends who have been in the industry for 40 years (?) So of course people wanna hear their classics.

I mean, she basically is the face of the event. It lends itself to people claiming she's just promoting her music as it is.

She has been doing covers in serious events since forever. I'm sure she would've written something 'appropriate' by now if she really wanted to.

Do you think she actually wants to write songs more meaningful, but she is afraid of how they would be perceived by fans who want pop / dance songs instead? :oprah:

literally half of Joanne says "hi".

Joanne, Million Reasons, Sinners Prayer, Come To Mama, Hey Girl, Angel Down

she could've performed The Cure if she wanted to, she probably just did not feel like it... it's not THAT serious serious lol

Do Billie or Lizzo who also did covers hate their own songs?

Billie and Lizzo have like 1-2 albums. They have small discographies.

I think LG doesn't think she has a lot of appropriate songs. The Cure is arguable, but I think it's risky to sing a song called the cure when there is no cure.

I don't think the fact that she has no song suitable for an event like that

The Cure is right there.
