The Guardian: Why are people streaming less music during lockdown

The Official Charts Company reported in the last week of March that audio streaming in the UK was up just 0.4% from the previous week. It added that 82.3% of the album chart came from streaming, up from 75.3% two weeks earlier. But streaming has only grown its share because physical sales have fallen. And while early numbers would naturally skew as people acclimatised to home working, the New York Times reported on 6 April that combined streams of the Top 200 on Spotify in the US slipped for the third consecutive week – hitting their lowest point of the year.

The music business is a highly interconnected ecosystem. [..] It is partly why Dua Lipa brought her album forward before the promotional bridge completely collapsed. It is also why Lady Gaga and Sam Smith pushed theirs back in the hope that things will return to something resembling normal when they finally drop.

I only listen to music when I go to work, fortunately I am still working but if I wasn't I probably wouldn't have streamed anything in a while

Yeah, music usually accompanies you during activities, not everyone likes laying down in a couch listening to music while looking at the ceiling.

A lot of people stream when they’re driving/walking/biking to work/school/parties/etcetera. And sadly the only place I’m really walking to these days is the couch.

Lord Temptation

Lockdown has forced the “real” us to come out of hiding. We used to stream lots of crappy music because we were in artificial environments (bars, gyms, stores) surrounded by crap people, trying to impress crap people. We did it to virtue signal :cryga:

No more need to be fake anymore. Let’s face it, streaming was invented for phoneys, by phoneys :messga:

It makes me sad that most people only use music as a background activity :messga: there is nothing better than smoking a j*int and listening to an album front to back whilst starting at a wall lmao :vegas:

Queen Bitch

I actually listen to more music now, because I have nothing else to do. I have listened to Madonna's entire discography the last few days. Plus I have listened to a lot of artists that I usually never listen to, such as Fiona Apple and Dua Lipa.
