Paula Abdul allegedly lying about a plane crash

I saw this on twitter and thought it was interesting, Paula Abdul has been allegedly consistently lying about a 1992 plane crash there have been no police reports or hospital records about. Here’s an article about it:

“Paula Abdul was on RuPaul’s new talk show, RuPaul, and he asked her to explain where she was when she disappeared for a bit in the 1990s and early 2000s. Paula went on a professional hiatus until 2002, when she reappeared as a judge on the first season of American Idol. According to Paula, she was in a plane crash around the end of the Under My Spell Tour in 1992. She says one of the engines of the seven-seater plane she was traveling in blew up, the right wing caught on fire, and the plane crash landed. Paula wasn’t wearing her seat belt, and she hit her head on the top of the roof. She says she underwent 15 cervical spinal surgeries to correct the damage from the crash, and took about seven years off.

During a 2009 radio interview, she claimed the plane went down and she woke up in the hospital. As for why no one found out, Paula claimed in an interview that she “quietly made it go away” because she didn’t want people feeling sorry for her.

 

Rich also did the map math and said that the National Transportation Safety Board only has a handful of crashes in Iowa in 1992, and all of them are outside of the flight path from St. Louis to Denver. However, the National Transportation Safety Board also says that if there was minor damage to the plane and no injuries reported, it might be classified as an “incident” and not an “accident,” which would explain why there is no record.”

that said, that doesn’t match up with Paula’s account. if, as she claims, an engine blew up, a wing caught on fire, and Paula had to undergo 15 surgeries, it’d definitely qualify as an accident, rather than an incident. Abdul also once claimed “The whole plane went up in flames,” when describing the crash to the Hudson Union Society”

The article also says:

”She told People in May 2005 that the engine caught fire 40 minutes into the trip. The plane caught fire, landed in a corn field in Iowa, and everyone on board survived.”

however, Twitter user @/AnthonyJakobs claims

“i attended a conference where she spoke 3 years ago and she told the story. she couldn’t walk for like 2 years, had spent a ton of time in recovery, and lost several friends in the crash from what i remember. she lost a lot of years of her life due to this, let’s believe women”

The dates don’t match up, either. We’ve established that it happened in ‘92 at the end of her Under My Spell tour, but in a KDWB radio interview, she said it was on tour, on her birthday in 1993 (June of that year). Let’s say she just messed up and meant ‘92, right? Well, the tour didn’t finish until that August, and she couldn’t have possibly been on tour while in hospital (obviously). Furthermore, in 2018, she recalled:

“And when I came to, all seven of us were holding hands. Everyone was saying prayers. But all I could think about was, ‘This isn’t right. It’s not my time to go.’ Then we crash-landed in flames in a cornfield. And I was knocked out again, only to wake up in a hospital where a microsurgeon had told me that I had crushed my entire cervical spine, which led to [inaudible] paralysis on my right side. Then I disappeared for close to seven years.”

...but that’s not true, either. Abdul released an unsuccessful album in 1995, which she did promote with several vigorous performances.

So, what is the truth?

Any info anyone has on this would be appreciated.

Likely story is that it was just an incident and with each telling she embellished. Each time you tell a story you effectively are rewriting the previous memory of it until you get further and further from the truth and sometimes it becomes an unrecognizable event to what actually happened and even you don't know the truth anymore. It's actually quite common - and likely if she had any drug use than it increases just how her memory of it might be. So she may not be consciously "lying" but the truth of what actually happened is probably not what she is saying.
