UK lockdown extended for at least another 3 weeks

Lockdown restrictions in the UK will continue for "at least" another three weeks, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has said.

At the daily No 10 briefing, Mr Raab said a review had concluded relaxing the measures would risk harming public health and the economy.

"We still don't have the infection rate down as far as we need to," he said.

It comes as the UK recorded another 861 coronavirus deaths in hospital, taking the total to 13,729.

Strict limits on daily life - such as requiring people to stay at home, shutting many businesses and preventing gatherings of more than two people - were introduced on 23 March, as the government tried to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Ministers are required by law to assess whether the rules are working, based on expert advice, every three weeks.

Mr Raab, deputising for Prime Minister Boris Johnson as he recovers from the illness, said: "Any change to our social distancing measures now would risk a significant increase in the spread of the virus. 

"That would threaten a second peak of the virus and substantially increase the number of deaths. It would undo the progress we've made to date and, as a result, would require an even longer period of the more restrictive social distancing measures."

Mr Raab said the review concluded that the measures were working, but there was evidence the infection was spreading in hospitals and care homes.

Some countries across Europe which introduced lockdown measures before the UK are now beginning to ease them, including Austria, Italy and Germany. But they continue to require some social distancing measures, which reduce close contact between people and prevent large gatherings.

The announcement in the UK comes after a meeting of the emergency Cobra committee, involving the first ministers of Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

I'm glad to hear that, but this still isn't preventing people to go out like usual.

I went out for shopping the other day for the essentials and the city was busy like before the lockdown, there were gloves thrown on the floor and groups of people walking together on the street. Even families with 3 children together walking like normal. WTF 

We need more stricts rules cause it's not working out as it should.

Here in the US, the Northeastern Region’s Governors agreed to extend lockdowns until May 15th as well. The curve is flattening but they agreed now is not the time to relax otherwise the next wave of infections will be out of control.

First of all your username, priceless lmao. Secondly, yes he’s being very selfish and only acting out of human greed. Some of the Republican Governors already mentioned they’re not following his directives. He’s still pushing despite testing not being where it should be, but he’s trying to be a hero who saved the economy during an election year. I wonder how that will look when the body count increases and out healthcare system collapses.
