More than 22 million American have lost their jobs in the last four weeks as the coronavirus pandemic has swept across the US, according to government figures.

The US labor department announced on Thursday that another 5.24 million people filed for unemployment benefits last week, making a total of 22.2 million since 14 March when nationwide stay at home orders led to an unprecedented wave of layoffs across the country.

Meanwhile, Trump wants to soften lockdown restrictions claiming we passed the peak...yet officials are still reporting there isn’t enough testing in place to ease these restrictions and end stay-at-home orders. Not sure what fairytale world Trump thinks he lives in. Somehow he’ll manage to get re-elected after fumbling horrendously with this pandemic.

Great Lockdown Depression here we come!

I wonder how other countries are managing at this point in time? Clearly the US is spiraling further down hill with each passing day. Trump said we were going to win big and we sure as s*** are; highest confirmed case count, highest death count, and probably highest unemployment claims submitted.

The thing is: Trump knows the unemployment rate is starting to look really bad for his administration in this election year. Softening the ban would most likely halt/reduce the number of jobs that were lost, but in doing so, it greatly endangers the entire population. Not to be cynical but... it's a case of "money >>>> people" that is just very typical of Republican politics.

Oh no doubt; profits over people is the mentality all these clowns currently have. I don’t think it’s a cynical approach; it’s a realistic view of what’s a priority for this administration right now. Sad thing is, we know he will soften restrictions and Governors that worship this man will follow along like the sheep they are putting everyone at risk. It’s become a domain of not if you get exposed or sick, but when you become exposed or sick.

The prediction wasnt that it will be 20 millions worst case scenario? The problem is that people will realise that months long lockdowns arent a good strategy only after the disaster.

The administration have one chance to do this lockdown right and then open up the economy again at the right time. I'm hoping it won't happen but the biggest **** up of all time would be opening it up at the wrong time and having cases get so bad again that they would have to go under a second major lockdown.

How much was the unemployment before COVID?

Unemployment rate was 3.5% before all of this started. With these 22M losing their jobs it is now estimated to be at 14-15%.

Not a priority for them anymore. It’s all about profits over people and boosting the economy. They’re willing to destroy the healthcare system in exchange for saving the economy.

It would be terrible for the economy to go into lockdown a second time. Let's see if their stupid enough to get there.
