Ryan Tedder: It’s “Tone-deaf” to release an album right now

He said some very dumb things but also made very good points. This is still a business and a fight for people's attention. It serves literally 0 purpose to release something if you can't be sure people will listen! Like to be honest, i would've enjoyed Future Nostalgia so much more if it weren't for the pandemic. I played it a few times but it got boring after a while because there's nothing else distracting me so i can go back to it, i cant play it while commuting or walking home or in the gym... so yeah i'm glad music is being postponed. Literally nothing, and i mean NOTHING sounds funnier and more delusional than "bUt wE nEeD mUsIc iN ThiS TiMe!!!1" why are yall pretending like music has an expiry date :lmao: all the music already released is still there you know. As far as i know it's humanly impossible to have listened to every song ever, so why dont you spend your time searching for new music & discovering new artists?

chaeri pls

I hate when ppl play the "moral police" and compete on who is more "righteous". Can we all just agree that for some ppl releasing music to the world is a form of love and for others it seems offensive / tone deaf? Can't there be a understanding that everyone processes things differently? ugh

Oh look. An established and experienced artist agreeing that Gaga was right to postpone the album.

But sure, @ladygagasashtray on twitter knows better. 🙄

I think a big part of the issue is people taking personal offense and speaking ill of musicians that choose not to release during this time frame.

I fully acknowledge the importance that music has, especially during times like these, but I think the ultimate issue is people acting as if all the music is in the world has suddenly disappeared and that these artists are doing something wrong for not releasing.

That's wrong on the fans, not the artist.

I do agree with his argument tho if we're just going to be sensitive in general, and it depends how you promote it or dedicate its profit to or what type of song or record it is. And of course if you're a real sensible artist, you may release something that will help fighting this pandemic or help those in need, or if not, just a song for a everyone to be happy. Or rather, postpone it only.

But if you're just a singer who cares only about money or profit, regardless of the record's genre or message. No please. Be ashamed of yourself.

Therefore, it still depends, and by the end of time, nobody still cares. Any artist can still release their music. It's still subjective tho, it only becomes objective and problematic when we put commercialism to it.

Ok, we're in a pandemic. But many people are sick and die EVERY DAY. This has nothing to do with music.

So no, I don't agree.

Also u have to consider other competition too

All these artists putting off releases right now means a surge later of releases all at once and a lot of competition

Besides giving fans something... I think commercially it may also make sense not to wait too long tbh

If I were Gaga I'd start considering releasing sooner rather than later

Sure early April has been a peak in news where attention span to music might be muted by GP

But tbh I'd consider releasing by early May before everyone else starts doing it at once

I literally laugh at the people who think that Gaga can’t release Chromatica in June and EASILY get a #1 even if the sales won’t be what they would’ve. Like how are you even a fan? Pre-orders have been up since 3/2. Although numbers haven’t come in, her pre-orders alone after 3 months will be more than some lower level artists accomplish with promo in one-week. Not to mention her name is out there right now in general, and after ASIB she has more casual fans gravitate to her AND it’s the return of more pop Gaga. Comparing 9/11 to a pandemic that has been happening for months and the news is already growing tired of coverage is also just ridiculous.

I agree the sales will probably be fine if she releases in late June & she'll have a #1....although July may be an even safer time period. May, though, would still be risky asf imo. But by late June the curve should have flattened a lot, there won't be news reports about a thousand dead per day, social distancing will be somewhat rolled back, & businesses will likely be "partially" open.....

*That is if a second wave doesn't occur in June/July.

Look, I want new music just as much as the next person but it is what it is. Right now is just not a good time to release albums and singles. There's plenty of music out there that we can listen to. Just go on Spotify and find something you like. It's not that hard. Come on, there's much, MUCH bigger problems than that in the world right now.

Why can't an artist release their album and also assist with the pandemic? Is someone incapable to do both? Clearly he can't walk and chew gum at the same time

The governor of NY LITERALLY said those exact words quote for quote two days ago. I’m from the US so that’s what I was talking about.

I’m from the US too. And the last time I checked the governor isn’t a healthcare professional. I’m talking about patterns that are appearing globally. The minute we say the worst is over and we relax restrictions cases will skyrocket again. That’s a fact.

No one said we’re relaxing restrictions nor am I suggesting it, so I’m not sure where you got that from. I watch his press conferences everyday on twitter and those were his words. He goes by data. The worst is over because the amount of growing cases, hospitalizations, and intubations have been down for several days consecutively. I’m not downplaying the very serious problem we still and will continue to have but every statistical model shows we are flattening the curve and the last two weeks were the worst. Statistically speaking, things can only get better. That’s a fact.

Statistically thing can get very worse. Pandemics are unpredictable.

Agree. For Gaga, it wouldn't feel right. That's cool, let's respect that. She has to do what's right for her.

he literally contradicts himself. he says it’s tone deaf but his explanation clearly means it’s not tone deaf it’s just bad business. you’re not gonna make as much money right now. FOH with all these people that are like “peace and love, we can’t release right now!” when it’s about money
