Janet was 38 at the time. She was trying to make a come back with her Damito Jo album. I'm assuming it didn't do super well. I can't remember. Damita Jo actually was her fifth and final consecutive #1 album despite the Superbowl fiasco. She couldn't do any US radio promotion or appear on MTV or VH1 so she resorted to late night TV shows (i.e. SNL,Jay Leno, etc.) and international promotion. 20 Y.O. was her lowest selling point, but Discipline was her sixth #1 album. Critical acclaim guarantees good longevity. I mean, look at what Ray of Light did for Madonnas career. Let's look at the Britney Jean original concept even, even without her own label had Britney been able to execute the original concept then she would have had artistic acclaim attached to her. Not just for her performances, but for her talent is songwriting and concepts. I don't think labels care about longevity of an artist's career, they just care about how much the artist can make them at the moment, then they look for replacements when they aren't hot anymore. They burn them out, then dump them.

Janet never needed her family to succeed and she's now a Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee. She got her bountiful success because of her music and natural talent, not because Michael was doing anything for her. She's said several times throughout her career that she didn't want to be attached to the Jackson family name and she wanted success on her own. But no,go off and be delusional. We stan delusion here on GGD. In the meantime, why don't you watch my Janet documentary "The Legend's Blueprint" and get educated on Ms. Jackson's musical legacy. not Chromatica 5,393
That sounds good on paper, but I feel like you're downplaying the influence Kevin Fereline had on her at the time.

StrawberryBlond 14,830
No way that her team would allow her to make her own label and be in complete control, first off. Next, I think you underestimate how limited Britney's general skills are. She's has everything done for her literally her whole life, considering that she was groomed to be a child star since she was little girl. According to those closest to her, she doesn't know how to do some of the most basic of tasks, she can barely operate a computer. After she was given a credit card, she discovered online shopping and went on a crazy spree and her dad went nuts and took her card off her and majorly restricted her internet usage. She couldn't be trusted to be alone with a computer that could lead to her buying things that cost money as she didn't understand the value of it. Someone like that can't possibly be business-minded. Basically, Britney isn't your standard adult and she's heavily medicated. If she was allowed to be in control of something all by herself, it would likely be a huge disaster. I don't understand all the inner workings of how businesses work and I've got a university degree. I really don't think someone who has been so watched over their entire life and had every little thing done for them would cope with it either. I'm not gonna question Janet's success and I honestly don't know much about her history, but I do have a question about her. If she didn't want to be tied to the Jackson name, why keep it as part of her stage name?

Well it is her legal name, and she was already known as that from a little girl, she was a child actress as well. More importantly, I doubt her label would have let her create a completely different stage name anyways. They were going to use her last name to help market her whether she liked it or not. I suppose she could have went by Janet only, a lot of people refer to as her first name only anyways.
