Trudeau: Vaccine may take a year and a half

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the current physical distancing efforts the “new normal,” as it is expected to continue for months with waves of the COVID-19 pandemic forecasted following the current first breakout.

And “this will be the new normal until a vaccine is developed,” said the prime minister, adding that the vaccine may take up to a year or a year and a half.

Earlier on Thursday, health officials presented Canada’s coronavirus modelling projections, which showed that the pandemic arrived later in Canada compared to other countries.

“We’re in the earlier state of the outbreak,” said Trudeau. “We’re at a fork in the road in terms of outcomes.”

He said the path it takes will be up to us, and said that while there are “unfortunately” going to be more deaths across the country in the coming weeks, there are things, such as distancing measures, we can do to continue minimizing the transmission.

Trudeau hopes that the first wave will be a few months, and that Canada will be able to open up the economy again, to an extent.

The pandemic has already taken a toll on Canadian jobs, as Statistics Canada showed in a report released on Thursday, showing the economic impact of the illness so far.

According to the report, employment fell by 1,011,000, or 5.3%, in March.

The total number of Canadians who were affected by either job loss or reduced hours was 3.1 million people.

“As stark as those numbers are, they aren’t a surprise,” said Trudeau on the report.

“We’ve all seen the impact of COVID-19, we all knew this was going to be a tough time.”

But the prime minister said no matter how long this pandemic takes, “we will be there to support Canadians.”

Everybody try to keep as happy and mentally healthy as possible. This is gonna inflate the mental health crisis we're already in. Among other things.

Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time.

We can't stay confined for a year, we have to find another solution other than quarantine, or it'll be a mess globally.

I agree. I understand the importance of confinement to flatten the curve but it's not a viable long-term solution.

if there’s any government in the world (that is not a draconian dictatorship) that thinks it can keep their citizens locked up in their homes for more than 3 months, they are delusional.

riots will break out in the streets before people stay put for an extended period of time.

You guys told me that we'd have a cure by this summer, now I look like a fool for believing you.

A year was the minimum scientists have given so this isn't exactly surprising. I just hope treatments which should be faster come soon.

As for staying at home I feel like we don't have a choice, The best option is to keep a strict lockdown for as long as possible and slowly ease up the restrictions or else It could end up spiking. Expect social distancing to be around for at the very least the next few months.

First 2 weeks, then a month. What's the difference between 3 and 4 months? Or between 4 or 5 months? And so on.

Governments should say from the start the limited time that they need to get ready to fight the virus as best as they can and then stop with the lockdowns. Other measures can still be in place, but a lockdown even partial shouldn't be used more than one time and more than a month.

Sorry to the people who want to be locked up in their houses for the next year. That's my opinion.
