APRIL 7, 2020 (New York and Geneva) — Superstar Lady Gaga today made an urgent appeal to recruit the world’s 24 million ‘tech rock stars’ to help fight back against the coronavirus (Covid-19) by developing life-saving solutions as part of the 2020 IBM Call for Code Global Challenge. Created by David Clark Cause and driven by Founding Partner IBM, the Call for Code Global Challenge is an initiative supported by Global Partner UN Human Rights and affiliate the Linux Foundation. In a personal video message tweeted to her 81.5 million followers, Lady Gaga sits with her own written notes and reads her ‘Call for Code’ plea, aiming to enlist the world’s brightest tech minds to take on the greatest crisis of modern times. “…This is Lady Gaga calling in. I had something that I wrote to say to you, and I’d like to make sure I get my point across so here we go. To all of the developers, problem solvers, innovators we need you right now during COVID-19 more than ever, your time, your talent, to use technology and data to change the world before the world changes us, even though it already has. Now is the time to fight back against this coronavirus to use open source technology to solve problems at scale and to save lives. A great technology solution can span the globe and help so many others. I know you know this. I know this is why you do what you do. With global cases and death numbers rising, and the pandemic’s unprecedented impact on health care workers and communities, developers are being asked to fast-track first submissions of solutions by April 27 with a focus on three areas: crisis communications, ways to improve remote learning, and how to inspire cooperative local communities. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton will serve on the Call for Code Eminent Jury for the second year-in-a-row to select the 2020 final winning solutions to be deployed that address both Covid-19 as well as climate change. The first three COVID-19 solutions will be chosen by May 5 with deployment beginning May 15. IBM has already pledged over $25 Million to develop and deploy top Call for Code solutions via their Code and Response initiative. Call for Code is also aided by the support of corporate sponsors including Verizon, Arrow Electronics, Persistent Systems, among others. “In only two years since the launch of Call for Code it has become the largest engagement of tech developers in history.
