We need one more before the album, then a third single that is released the day of the album. This is the only way this era can have multiple hit singles. For example, Beautiful, Dirty, Rich is a promo single for The Fame. From what I remember it wasn't promoted nearly as much as Just Dance and Poker Face were, though she performed it live quite a bit. Promo singles are just to generate buzz and some anticipation, normally it’s for the fans. They’re not sent to radios nor do they get MVs (most of the time). You could see them as just a treat to feed the fans. BDR, Hair, Dope, Venus, A-YO were promo singles. DWUW and MR were also originally promo singles but they were then released as official singles. A single is official and promoted heavily. Singles stand out to represent an album in the best way. A promo single suppose to give fans/listener a taste of what the album is suppose to be like. Its job is simply for the listener to think "hmm I like this song and I want to hear more of it" but it's not supposed to be a full blown smash... if that happens that its a bonus.
