The UK has completely blundered their response. California and the UK have roughly the same population size but the UK death total is 15x higher (5k~ vs 300~). Well it spread in Europe faster than in California NY has been proactive and their situation is bad there too Some of this is luck too. If you were one of the first Infected and started blowing up, u get more caught off gaurd The US had more time to see a pattern and States make tougher actions... The UK only saw China and Italy which could have been isolated cases It's not easy to make a decision to shut down a whole nation without knowing what's gonna happen So easy to look back now seeing the income what we should of done but when things are unknown it's not so easy There have been many outbreaks in the past that managed to be contained. Few guess it was gonna spread this much

I don't know if we can really determine if outside factors are more important than a lock down because California was the first state to issue a stay at home order and now, for example, more people will likely die in Texas than in California despite a lower population, lower density, higher temps, later outbreak. 7m people in the Bay Area (San Francisco, etc) were mandated to stay at home after 5 deaths. States did not follow that trend, at all. Argh. I confused the UK's population/death count with England's population/death count. That's 'only' about a 10 mil difference (still not a very good comparison, I know). But, yeah, obviously, it's not meant to be a competition. The US doesn't have a national lockdown, ffs, we're absolutely screwed as a nation. California is having right now a lot more cases than any other state around it. It also has more deaths and cases than Florida and Texas. So for now, the effect of the lockdown is small. I'm not saying that it wont be an effect, but looking all around the globe, for me it is clear that other factors are more important. With a lockdown u can buy time to get ready or control the number of cases. At this point, with the virus all over the world in such large numbers, for me it is clear that the virus cant be stopped. The experts are saying the same thing and expect that even if the summer and these measures will slow it down, it will be back in September without a vaccine.
