Madonna, Janet, Whitney and Mariah are the root of all that have followed.

It's Mariah, Celine and Whitney aka the vocal trinity. Their generation is the peak for vocal slayage that pop girls lacked nowadays. Of course Beyonce, Christina, Gaga and Ariana are the exemptions:ally:

Madonna is a whole generation herself. She is the epitome of a musical pop girl. I'm not her stan but I give credit where credit is due.

For me:

Late 2000s / Early 2010s > Late 90s / Early 2000s > Mid 2000s > Late 2010s / Early 2020s > Mid 2010s

Meanwhile I'm still here waiting for little miss Alice Chater to blow up and save this current generation of pop girls

Smother Em Eh

You really should have added a poll

Although I do love the Britney, Xtina era I have to say late 00’s/ early 10’s because of the diversity, quality, sex symbols etc.

Britney, Christina, Beyoncé and P!nk. :applause:

But the 80's also had an amazing group of pop divas: Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson. Maybe even Cher and Tina Turner who were still kicking ass.

The 80s had so so many of them (even seasonal ones): Donna Summer, Olivia Newton John, Diana Ross, Sheena Easton, Grace Jones, Debbie Gibson, Taylor Dayne, Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, Paula Abdul, Pat Benatar, Belinda Carlisle, Jody Wately, Laura Brannigan, Kim Wilde, Sandra and the list goes on.

she DESERVES

giphy.gif?cid=19f5b51a3d13c28fbbb3d4bff1

besides her talent, she’s SUCH a sweetheart. ive gotten to meet her twice, see her live 3 times, and every time, she sang her heart out, danced the night away and STILL was the kindest right after the show. i got to go to an event where she previewed the music video and song for ‘tonight’ before the release, and she gave us a lil a capella performance, she’s incredible

You're mixing pop with every other genre. Some of these are not pop girls.

but that’s what pop is. an amalgamation of dance, R&B, etc. it’s hard to pinpoint pop as a genre because inherently...it’s not. there are distinct pop features, but any genre can become pop. take Lizzo’s Truth Hurts. it’s an R&B song, but it’s also pop because of the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus structure and the repetitive nature of the chorus.

furthermore, most artists mix genres. for instance, Billie is considered an alternative artist (which, arguably, is just a blanket term and not a genre, but regardless), though some of her biggest hits are electropop (bad guy, you should see me in a crown and everything i wanted). most of Rihanna’s discography is dance pop/electronic pop, but she has nearly as much R&B and reggae pop.

I'm going to say 2000's. It's the generation I grew up with and the ones I feel have the best overall discographies. A lot of the ones from other generations only had one or two good albums and not much else (to me). But the 2010's would come a close second. That was the last time pop music felt big. It feels very sad ever since and like we've lost sight of what being a popstar used to mean. Now it's a case of, if you get one big hit, people question if you're now a main pop girl or are going to be a future pop queen. It's so alien to someone of my generation.

BTW, @omen, how old are you? Because saying that Dua's peak right now is as big as or bigger than Britney's is factually untrue, from someone who grew up in Britney mania. I notice that the expectation of young people right now of a great peak seems to be much lower than what it used to be. If you have seen how big Britney was back in the day, you'd change your mind. Not slamming Dua here but she has so far to go before she's even remotely close to that level. She only has one #1 hit in her home country. And trust me, the UK really supports its homegrown talent, so if she's struggling to get to the top here, it's indicative that she's not connecting as much as she could. Everyone knows who Britney is but if I said Dua Lipa to my parents, they'd be totally lost. Her name is still very anonymous to people who don't listen to modern music.

I was going to say the same thing. The 80's seemed full of one hit wonders and artists who were around for a few albums but seemed to give it up as soon as the 90's hit. I wish I could show the youngsters that this is the way it always was - there's only a few big hitters every decade and everyone else is only around for a short time.

Good point but still.
