Since COVID-19 is still going strong as a pandemic and spreading like crazy, I thought it might be beneficial to share this news here (although I'm not sure if it's appropriate for GGD, take it down if not ) Some labs (no, not Haus Labs ) have given the opportunity for people to contribute to COVID research in order to develop possible vaccines and cures for it. Basically, anyone with a computer can download two programs and lend some of their CPU and GPU power for research, as labs tend to send some work units to PC power outside of the labs in order to get things done faster and more efficiently. Usually, these works are done by big computers that have strong computing powers. However, these software are available for everyone to download and use. And since we need every single bit of computing power we can have, anyone with any computer, no matter how weak or strong, can (and should) contribute as much as they can. The two software (BOINC client which runs Rosetta@home, and folding@home) are both customizable and allow you to decide how much power you want to dedicate to research. You can choose to have them run in the background as you work with minimal power, or run on full power when you're not using your machines. BOINC is more customizable (and frankly, more user friendly) as you can decide exactly how much CPU power to allow it to use. Folding@home is good if you're willing to allow some GPU usage, as BOINC only uses CPU while folding uses both CPU and GPU. I have been doing this for a while, despite my tiny computer, and it's been going smoothly. I almost always have either one of the programs running, but not both at the same time because my machine isn't that strong. I'll link the original reddit post because it has all the details on how to download, install, and run the software. If you have any (basic) questions on how to use BOINC, let me know. I'm not very familiar with folding@home because I rarely run it, but I'll try to help with that too. "Distributed computing is a fairly simple concept - a university, government research institution, etc takes a large chunk of data and breaks it up into small pieces. The data is sent out to anyone who is a member of that research team, your computer does the number crunching, and the finished product is sent back to the institution to be added to the whole body of research." Rosetta recently sent an update about COVID tasks, and folding@home has specific tasks that are for COVID in particular (I'm trying to find the reddit page for that particular program but I can't recall what the title was, I'll link you as soon as I find it).
