"Queer is an umbrella term".

Don't get smart with me, it still doesnt make much sense.

pleaseeeee it does make sense! You shouldn’t be asking "is she lesbian or bi" like those are the only two valid options, especially in a space (this forum) that is highly queer centric

It’s ok if you just don’t know about it but there are plenty of resources out there to help you get that information

Queer is an umbrella term for being not straight, and sometimes not cisgender. People use it when they are lesbian, gay, bi, pan, trans, nonbinary, and other identities. Some people use queer because they don't connect to the limitations of identity or don't feel the need to put themselves in one box. For them, queer encompasses all of their identities in one word. It's a freedom from absolutes while expressing what they aren't.

I'm probably gonna get hate for this but I really don't understand a lot these "new" terms in regards to sexuality and gender identity either (like some others here). What is queer? What is non-binary? There are so many terms now that don't seem to make much sense or really differentiate themselves from the traditional terms (ie, gay, lesbian, bi, trans).

It's not that difficult. She's not lesbian nor bi, she just isn't straight, so she just goes as QUEER. It doesn't limit her sexuality but at the same time she makes clear she's not straight.

In my case, I also go as Queer. I'm not gay, nor straight, but I'm also not Bi because it puts a limit in what I'm atracted to. So Queer pretty much sums it.

Kindness rules all.

Maybe it is because you’re old school. But sexuality is a spectrum, not boxes. Read up on an scientific literature rehearsing sexuality and you’ll see that there’s a whole ocean of concepts left it be explored by the general public lol

Does this help any?

EDIT: I suppose I should say that straight and cisgender (the left most treebranches in each of the main branches) are not considered queer, but I put them there to kind of show how everything balances out.

So she likes everyone? Or might be lesbian and just doesn’t want to say so? Isn’t that a front?

It actually does! Thanks! I guess what I don't get is the difference between pansexual and queer?

The word queer has been used for over a century. Genders under the nonbinary umbrella have existed for centuries. None of these words or concepts are new. Queer can mean anything as long involving gender and sexuality as long as it is not heterosexual or cisgender or both. Nonbinary means that you do not identify on the binary of man and woman. Some people feel they are both but some people feel they are neither.

It's like squares and rectangles. All pansexual people are 'queer' or LGBTQ+, depending on which term they prefer to use for themselves, but not all queer people call themselves pansexual (because they might not be.)

Got it. So Rebecca just prefers to use "queer" as an umbrella term but doesn't want to directly label her sexuality I guess?
