My dad works with construction and has a few N95 masks at home. I need to go grocery shopping soon but I am more afraid of being judged by people for having a mask that is supposed to be used for medical professionals. Even tho he’s had them here at home. (Not a lot)

I dunno man, this is a tough situation with a lot of layers. When I'm at work, seeing half these ppl wearing  N95s (improperly) to pick up milk and apples; while listening to podcasts that are interviewing Drs saying they are baking their N95s, the only one theyve had for days, in ovens at night to try to sterilize them for the next 16 hr shift.... I can't say I don't "feel a way".

------

I, personally, would adjudicate it like this:

Does your dad still legitimately need these for his construction job?

If not, keep an amount to cover each family members (in case of a greater emergency then milk and apples) and donate the rest.

In the meantime:

1)make good reusable homemade masks. If possible, make more and donate those too. Your dad may even have material good for this.

https://www.nytimes.com/article/coronavirus-homemade-mask-material-DIY-face-mask-ppe.html

2)Practice good mask hygiene: don't ever shift, remove or touch your mask while using and COVER YOUR NOSE!

If online grocery delivery is not possible:

3) Go shopping at a less crowded time and shop quickly

4)Remember the mask does not make you invincible.: keep your distance and STILL cover your masked mouth when you sneeze/cough

5) physical distancing indoors: if someone's in an area of an aisle that I need something, I come back around later.

6)

 Notes From An Insider:

Spoiler

Respect the store workers and their space too.

We can't move from our workspaces in the aisles, on the floor, or two feet from you behind the counters or registers--nor is it possible to physical distance from our own co-workers while working.

We are very vulnerable, stressed out and on edge bc we know it's only a matter of time before one of us gets it. A local store just closed this week to be disinfected from a positive employee

*Please remember we are NOT inanimate objects and keep your distance when approaching us: Do not feel free to tap us on the shoulder or stand above or next to us when talking. RESPECTFULLY get our attention, from a DISTANCE.

*Don't take offense when we put a hand up when ur making a bee line towards me or walk away when you come swooping into our space, browsing croissants, oblivious to the fact a living human being was standing there this whole time.

*Don't stalk around us like vultures when we're restocking. It's creepy, rude and a group of people, standing shoulder to shoulder, huffing and puffing into my confined space kind of undermines this all, doesn't it?

*Don't you DARE take your anger out on US! We don't know when toilet paper is coming! Paper aisle (from the moist booty wipes to dinner napkins) has been a ghost town since February. Ask one of your neighbors who came around weeks ago, like it was Supermarket Sweep, mopping multiple carts of the stuff. DON'T follow us into bathrooms complaining and don't scream at us accusing opening staff and the overnight workers (all 6 of us) of stealing it all before you got to it. Yes. We've been hiding 24 pks in our 6" deep locker s and conjured bags of ever-holding to sneak it home on public transit. Mu who. Ha.Ha.Ha. 🙄

PS: if I catch another one of you coming into Employee Only areas and taking merch, you will catch hands. I will call code ass whoop over PA and you will catch ALL the hands.

Hope this helps. ..

I say wear it and don’t feel bad about it. I work in a grocery store and see people wear them all the time. Our company even provided us with ppe (not N95’s though). The most important thing you can do right now is protect yourself the best you can.

Yeah that’s the problem. The stigma for the masks is terible. That’s bad when you have the right equipment to protect your health but you can’t use it. I just want people to know that the shortage of mask is not because of hoarding but more because of malfunctioned planning. Accusing people who has the masks now is toxic and counter-effective in this situation. 😭

Why can't it be both?

And deciding who should and shouldn't have medical masks is a serious question to ask yourself if you have some.

N95s are desperately needed by those face-to-face with the infected day in and day out.

Surgical masks, though faulty in there own right, at least the medical community are familiar with its function and can jerry-rig it to be more optimal.

It s very simple: The US government has ****ed us. We only have each other to do the best and right thing for our communities now.

If it gets to the point where Drs and nurses are wrapping their heads in t shirts.....................we're done.

We are all in a position that no one asked to be in.

There are tough decisions to be made now.

The best equipment needs to go to the frontlines--the healthcare community.

Period.

I think everybody has a different view on it no need to stress. To my perception, hospitals is instead our last frontier, we’re the front. The virus is all over our society already and it’s in the dark, you don’t know when you’d catch it. Take care and stay healthy!

No offense, you need glasses then.

If I can continue using your military analogy...

Yes. The virus is already all over. The civilian front is being decimated. So much so that we are being told that leaving the field entirely (staying home) is the best thing we can do to help fight this war.

Resources need to be poured into the people left at the frontlines. The people taking ALL of the flak, 24/7, running toward the fire and healing the fallen ( which is increasingly including themselves).

They have been screaming for backup for MONTHS.

Our most valuable soldiers have ALWAYS been those keeping us all alive. If they are left defenseless there is no hope.

We need to stress about their safety. The healthcare system CANNOT collapse.I

Enchanting

That's interesting. Didn't they say a few weeks ago that wearing masks is pointless? :awkney:

Today Explained: The emergency room emergency --https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/vox/today-explained/e/68339422

It's already getting boring explaining. No new reasonable point bring to the table, just a lot of stinky fumes and arrogance.
Stop twisting my points and read with a nicer attitude.

1. Since the beginning of the topic I never suggest any body to take medical supplies from health workers and I've never look down on their role because my parents are one of them. I feel really bad because people has little knowledge act like they know sh!t and didn't believe to cover their fricking outputs since the beginning so a tons of people got infected and put more fricking burden on my parents for god sake!

2. Stop blaming people on the shortage of supply also because it's the leader class' stupid prediction and terrible execution/preparation. People has the right to protect themselves, if there's no god forsaken policy on limiting the sale in the beginning and until now, people have the right to buy it. It's up to them to give those PPEs to hospitals or not because stopping themselves from getting infected/infecting new people is also a way to help so let people do their thing stop class shaming it. GETTING YOURSEFL SAFE IS ALSO HELPING US.

3. The last frontier means the final defense you have. Losing it means you loose all. I've never said they're any less important so try read and understand without prejudice first. And to further explain this YES you need to protect your final wall at all cost but this is a fricking viral pandemic. You also need to protect everyone out there so that they won't get infected. The health system cannot handle this mass system overload if millions got infected let alone saving it. Imagine every doctors and hospitals get enough PPEs but 34 Millions are infected out there. How could they handle it? Doctors and Hospitals play the roles of healers. They'd treat you when you got sick but they won't help you prevent the infection. Give them everything they need to treat but also don't give them more patients. It's more devastating. Spend your time, read about the virus behaviors, read about the infection rate and how fast the number of infection doubles. Right now the virus is spreading up at a fcking geometric progression but I think it would be very hard for you to understand because you all can't resist the appeal to emotion fallacy from the dumb social media.

I don't think anyone was fighting with you on 99.9% of what you stated here.

The concern -- that .1% -- for me, anyway, has always stemmed from who should be wearing medical masks/the best masks right now.

It shouldn't be them having to wear garbage bags and scarves to treat people 24/7while we go merrily shopping once a week with N95s when a homemade one would do...do you not agree that that shouldn't be the case?

Cover your face with whatever you want but shouldn't the heavy-duty stuff go to healthcare workers?

I'm not blaming the people for this situation, but now too much of it has been left up to us, individually, to decide. That's what happens when leaders don't lead.

I stand by what I've said and the legitimate concerns I,and many in the medical community, have stated in both your threads now. I don't know what class shaming has to do with it. (Unless those who have a lot of the good stuff are now feeling a way, about being made to feel a way, for having it? Those ppl still have a tough decision to make for the greater good just like everyone else though).
