The flamebait in this thread is absurd. People shouldn’t be buying masks, they should be in there homes point blank period. :interestinga:

Read it before you reply. CDC suggests using cloth masks. No one in this thread speaks a word about encouraging other people to buy masks that’s for health workers. Make your own. Sure rich people can go home and stay there for a month without worrying a thing. Poor people they have to go out there at some point to maintains their survival needs.

After countless debates and lot of attack on the idea of wearing masks to stop the spread, CDC today recommends all U.S citizens to wear mask when they're out in public or crowded places in fight with the new corona virus. It does not have to be the medical grade masks but a simple cloth covering would also help.

Wear a mask and save lives!

P/s: I told my idea a week ago and I got badly attacked just because that's not what "experts" are saying. :bradley: I find it extremely sad on how people are obsessed with scientism, everything has to have the stamp of the white blouse on it before you start to believe it. We wasted the whole February to stop the spread of the disease already. In this age of chaos, you have the right to be skeptical about things, even they're from the governments or officials. If you don't have enough time for carefully researching about an issue, at least don't attack somebody else when they want the best for you. CDC has been misleading, the toll has been paid and it's paid by us.

I don’t know why anyone attacked you over that. I mean health field workers wear them to help prevent disease from spreading so I don’t see how they could hurt.

I understand the idea of not wasting masks so medical workers can use them but don't fight over people for wearing them, a little protection isn't gonna kill :selena:

I don't think many experts were saying don't wear them. In fact most did say if ur sick or caring for someone u should wear them

The bigger issue has been that these masks for the time being have been limited and if every person wore them whenever they went out (and changed them frequently as your supposed to) there aren't enough masks to go around and if a shortage hits hospitals its worse

If there's enough for everyone it's great if we all wear but I think it was more a matter of prioritising where it's needed most badly if supply is limited

Also even if a Nation has enough for every citizen to wear there's another thing to consider. Just because a Nation has enough doesn't mean all nations have enough... And this is a global pandemic that as we saw, in the 21st century within weeks spreads to the whole globe

If Nations can look at the world as a whole instead of just their borders and Remember that the pandemic is global... It may be better to help a nation that could be in shortage even just for hospitals and critical areas than to have ur general population use it

I don't think the reports of Nations going to outbid contracts from other nations without their knowledge and taking cargo due to arrive is cool at all

That behavior suggests the supply is still a problem. Until production capacity can meet everyone's needs, I still wonder if encouraging the general population to use them is a good idea

If hospitals run out cuz ppl are using them to go to the grocery store, I don't think that's a good trade off especially since they are most effective with professionals who know how to use them anyway

Look at how ****ed America is already. Not sure they should be referred to anywhere in the world as any source of recommendations.

@Economy I agree and totally support your concern. I just found out one flaw is that while we are waiting for enough supply, a large number of people out there are getting infected by minutes. It’s mandatory to protect health workers as they’re a crucial part of the treatment, we should also halt the spread of the disease in the meantime because at this infection rate, there would be not enough doctors and nurses to take care for us in the coming days.

All protection and guidlines must be intensively carried altogether, we should have done this months ago. Anyway, doing something is at least better than none. Stay healthy!

I agree to whatever extent possible. Just not if it were to lead to shortages where it's most critical

If all the doctors got sick (many still do dispute masks imagine if they didn't have them) that would be even worse for a health shortage

I just hope the measures to increase mass production start to yield results soon

Nobody out there were panic hoarding anything because if people find out anyone wearing a masks they would discriminate them to death and brutally insult them. The shortage of mask is not because people are hoarding it but because the government didn't prepare enough for it even when they have months to prepare. Reportedly 3M sold 10 millions masks for foreign dealer but nobody say a thing about it, instead they keep blaming on people.

Keep it simple, masks in hospital and labs are supposed to be supplied by the federal governments.  Masks in Walmarts and HomeDepots were meant for the normal people. Now because it's the government's fault in supply chain so people have to feel ashamed to buy masks? I don't get it as without the masks, the people are also exposing themselves to the virus and who feels pity for them?

Thank to people like you the Americans were led to believe that mask will do nothing and it's morally wrong for them to use masks now for this pandemic and went out there the whole month without a cover on their face. We got nearly 300,000 cases today for that. I've never suggested anyone to take masks away from health workers so try better next time when you bring the cloth arguments at me. This is what happens when people who can't see a bigger image but try to give their say on the problem.

"The general public needs to stop hoarding masks and gloves. They don't need them. There are extreme shortages for medical personnel. I work in a chemistry lab and before it was shut down, we were literally on our last pairs of gloves with no backup boxes. This pandemic would have been x100 less stressful if people didn't panic hoard, but now we're all paying the price." - All I can see in your narratives is discouraging people from using masks. regardless what type of masks it is.

This is hilarious. I never said companies weren't to blame either, so firstly, don't put words in my mouth.

Second, cloth masks are now being used by healthcare workers, and they have to change their cloth mask every single time they exit a room and enter another, and by normal laboratory and medical protocol, you dispose of that mask (and gloves). You think the cloth masks are being supplied by the federal government and inspected to ensure quality and safety of the worker? No, they're not. So when a pandemic occurs, don't you think medical professionals will take any mask they can get their hands on (the type you'd see in Walmart, etc), because they need something single use to protect themselves even just a little bit, whereas people from home could've started using cloth to begin with since really they should ONLY be going out once every few weeks to grocery shop or to do something important? I work in a laboratory and the joint hospital was scrounging our department for extra gloves and masks because they had simply run out. And why is that? People in the department, when declared a pandemic, literally went to the stockroom to clear out the hand sanitizer, gloves, and masks. I had to reuse gloves for a few weeks prior to the shutdown because all gloves were on back order until late April. This is directly related to hoarding, and don't tell me it isn't. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'm not apologizing for my opinion on this. I've seen firsthand the people who actually do NEED the gloves and masks NOT get them. And yes, I would say someone who works in a ****ing ER needs the gloves more than you going out in public to go grocery shopping. Don't disrespect the people who are working in these conditions. It's unbecoming. :coffee:

Let's me tell you the truth and it may hurt. It's two way, you're all  fricking down played it and unprepared for it too. Hospitals and labs should be the ones who has the clearest picture of what's gonna happen. You're all see a pandemic incoming and y'all have all the time + exclusive information on it but still you did not prepare for it. You wait until the people who scared buy it before you then you playing the blame game. I have no hate towards hospitals and my parents even work in there. They've been suggesting the board to store some masks but they didn't think it was a good idea. It's good to have empathy for those heroic worker but please don't blame now. Good attitude and cooperation from all side is the best solution for now.

Why let the people to be the ones who initiate the act? Is that the people are more sensitive and more aware of the pandemic in the first place? Yes it is, and it's also because you guys think masks is unimportant with all the propaganda going on even till today. I hate the act of hoarding but I also hate the act of blaming without realizing the root cause. Hospitals and Government are UNPREPARED and took the masks for granted in the first place.

This morning, I still find there's tons of masks in Franklin Walmart, Tennessee. Instead of spurring the blame on nobody would know if they even exist or not, why don't you come to mass retailers because to my observation today, they still have  a lot. No people dare to buy it because they got  fricking scared that the blame will be on them.

The masks are still there in the stores. People don't wanna buy because they want to save for medics. Medics morals keeps on spreading hate and firing blame without really looking for the solution even if it's out there. Tragic. @Chromatography

@Ancient Alien

I stand by what I said: YOU (Joe Schmoe on the street) don't need a (desperately scarce medical grade) mask.

I also stand by my second post in your thread, that you didn't seem to have a reaction to, too:

Wrap every scarf/shirt/bandana/underwear round your head when you leave the house...go off and thank you for trying.

But here are the bald-ass facts

Our nation's leadership f#cked us in not keeping our emergency stockpiles full and the pandemic taskforce intact

Our nation's leadership f#cked us in inadequately preparing and warning us about what would inevitably happen and tools needed survive this

Our nation's leadership is STILL f#cking up not utilizing and mobilizing industries, funds, laws, departments, and resources that were ALL established to keep us safe and from being in this situation

I'm trying to understand who this touchdown dance of a thread is for?

We are so f#cking far behind this 8 ball, that the concerns that I, other posters and many Drs had around the mask debate--the efficacy of masks worn by laypeople, the inadequacy of improperly worn mask, the fact that people will still buy/hoard/use these precious medical masks instead of making their own, the time it takes to change the culture of 330 million stubborn independent Americans (including, by your own evidence, Tennessee) to do the right thing--are still very much present.

ON HOARDING

What you see in your town is not the whole story. We healthcare 6-8 dust masks in my stores health aisle. Nothing has been there since New Years. Just like with people cashing out stocks as soon as there was word of a virus coming, people started buying up for resale WEEKS ago.

*3/14/20 Colvin Bros of TENNESEE, bought out 17,700 bottles of hand sanitizer from regional stores to price gouge online

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/14/technology/coronavirus-purell-wipes-amazon-sellers.html?action=click&module=RelatedLinks&pgtype=Article

*4/2/20 A hoarder/black marketers' stockpile of nearly 1 MILLION MEDICAL SUPPLIES (including 192,000 N95 respirators, 130,000 surgical masks, nearly 600,000 medical-grade gloves, and surgical gowns, disinfectant towels, particulate filters, hand sanitizer and spray disinfectant) will go to local health workers

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/02/nyregion/brooklyn-coronavirus-price-gouging.html?searchResultPosition=22

If your TN stores are still SO full of masks, than your government is ****ing up. Because this storm WILL roll across EVERY state and mess you up just like the coastal cities. You need to take the energy in this thread and call up your local govmt. Cuz at this point, discreetly buying up all those masks for the state's cache of supplies would not be a bad idea.

Yes health care workers should go without protective gear because the federal government can’t get their shiit together :neyde: the reality is that the government sucks and isn’t doing that so people in healthcare need to get what they can where they can. They are not adequately protecting themselves as it is because they cannot find the supplies

I literally read an article yesterday about a doctor who had to buy his own masks on the dark web, meeting someone at a seemingly abandoned warehouse, and seeing the mass quantities that were stockpiled in there. So yes people are hoarding and exploiting this shortage

But that’s all perfectly okay as long as you don’t feel a little embarrassed buying some right? Get a cloth one and let the healthcare workers have everything else or they won’t be able to treat people

Yes! This is Dr. Salerno. He treats Medicaid/Medicare patients, like me and my family. I actually went to the location in the pic, but never saw him bc --and here's another effed up aspect of the U.S. healthcare to discuss -- there were too many ppl waiting (bc so few Drs  take government insurance),I had to leave after waiting for 3 hrs or Id miss the last bus home.

My dad works with construction and has a few N95 masks at home. I need to go grocery shopping soon but I am more afraid of being judged by people for having a mask that is supposed to be used for medical professionals. Even tho he’s had them here at home. (Not a lot)
