Supersonic 49,376
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Monday secured the right to rule by decree after his Fidesz party passed a law in parliament granting him open-ended extra powers to fight the coronavirus outbreak. The legislation extending a state of emergency has triggered criticism from opposition parties, human rights groups and the Council of Europe, Europe’s main rights forum, as it contains no timeframe. It also imposes jail time of up to five years on those hindering measures aimed at containing the spread of the virus and on those spreading false information related to the crisis. Rights groups said this could be used to muzzle journalists. source: https://www.reuters.com/article/health-coronavirus-hungary-law/update-1-hungarys-pm-secures-open-ended-emergency-powers-to-fight-coronavirus-idUSL8N2BN3UA In short: - State of emergency with no time limit - Parliament suspended indefinitely - Orban to rule by decree, alone and unchallenged - All elections suspended

tomsches 17,550
I'm sure this is against EU laws/regulations. You can't be a dictatorship and be part of the EU. They have to respond and tell them to stop or they will be kicked out.

This is the most important part. Matter of fact, the EU trying to intervene could be seen as violation of international law and trigger economic sanctions (at best) and wars (at worst). If the EU intervened at all, they'd do it via indirect sanctioning or "stern reminders".

The EU could quite easily suspend Hungary's membership though, supported by the member states and a suspension of their membership of the EU would most likely harm their economy drastically "through all the tears and all the lies, i'm gonna dance until i feel alright"
