US becomes epicenter of COVID-19 pandemic

I have my doubts about your theory. The municipalities with the (relatively speaking) most cases in my country barely have a train station. They got hit hardest because people from a few villages happened to be at a celebration in a bigger city, and apparently it spread quicklier than it did in the bigger city. The places that got hit hardest in Italy aren't per se the connected cities either.

What I do think is that the virus will start spreading earlier on in places where many people from different places meet, mostly big cities. Day 1, the virus starts spreading in Europe. Day 5, the virus starts spreading in New York. Day 9, the virus starts spreading in big cities in the US and New York's suburbs. Day 13, suburbs of the big cities get hit. Day 18, and rural counties get hit. The high number of cases in New York is because it's a globalized city where people from all around the world meet, which gave the virus more time to spread in New York than in other places. If the first spreader of the virus in the US happened to have been in a rural place rather than New York, then that place would seem the worst hit. But the probability of the first spreader going to a big city is much, much higher (tourism, business) than that person going to a rural village.

This all also does not mean that the transmission rate is higher in a big, crowded city than in a smaller place. Population density and mass gatherings are likely offset by the fact that people in bigger cities are more likely to live in single households, whereas more suburban (don't know about rural) communities are more likely to be families. Families in big cities with children are also likely to have less children per household. Once one person in a household is infected, you can be pretty much certain the rest gets it, too, leading to a higher transmission rate.

Whether more rural places in the US will be affected less or more pretty much entirely depends on how they use the information from a place like New York about effective measures and good timing to their advantage. If they take enough days for the virus to spread without locking down, they'll be hit just as bad.

There are problems with your theory. NYC is nowhere near the first place to be effected in the USA by the pandemic. In fact, it was Washington State and California, that first got Corona almost two months ago. The spread there was aggressive at first, but due to measures being put in place, the spread from urban centers to suburbs so to say, has Been at a much slower pace than NEW York.  As New York is one of the only cities in the US that is so densely populated and so public transport dependent, the virus will not spread the same way. Many states have already inacted pretty strict social disntancing measures- which will slow it down considerably. NYC is too late. The city did not shut down fast enough. People from the whole world were going in and out of it and NYC’s inhabitants were going about their business spreading it around rampantly. Now that testing is more and more availible, the cases in NYC have exploded, showing the shutdowns happened too late. Other urban centers around the country, including mine in Charlotte have already gone to “shelter in place” without a major outbreak, which will greatly slow down the spread, even those cases will go up due to the availibility of testing.

My county has finally issued a stay at home order to go into effect tonight at 11pm until April 9. The lack of action everywhere is something.

The population in Italy is one the oldest there is, with an average age about 7 years above the majority of the world. This automatically makes the mortality rate higher. The epicentre in Italy in the North got bombarded so fast that they were literally unplugging people from their ventilators to give to younger people with a better prospect of surviving, it started at people age of 90 being unplugged then 80 then 70 and now even some 60 year olds don't get treatment.

Its grim there.

Has to do something with the age of population. Italy has the 2nd oldest population in the world, while USA is at 36.

And mess at Finland being 3rd. No wonder people are going crazy here :bradley:

Well for one thing, the cases are dramatically rising the last few days in the US so people are just seeing the onset of symptoms. The very sick likely won't die for another two weeks so we should see the death toll increase then. A lot of people in Italy have had the virus for some weeks now in comparison to the US which had very few cases at the start of March. There are also other factors, so the US won't see a 8% death rate like Italy but it will definitely rise from where it currently is.

Not blaming for the pandemic of course, no one has control on this virus.

But I blame him for the way he handled all this situation, from not believing that this virus is dangerous, to giving free tests too late, and to not wanting to make any emergency isolation plan.

He already thinks about the end of this and bringing everything to normal asap because of "the economy"..

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

Something I forgot to mention, was that the US is not seeing scenarios just yet where hospitals are overrun enough that health professionals actually have to choose who lives and who dies. In Italy, this a real situation and no doubt the lack of beds/ICU units have contributed to a growing death number. If the US reaches that point, particularly in New York you may also continue to see a higher death rate as time goes on. If they don't reach that point you won't see it, but the way the US has been slow particularly with ventilators is concerning.

Italy also has one of the highest anti-Vaxx  movements in the world. The death rate will not be near as high in America. And why are we comparing America, a country the size of Europe, to Italy. Should be comparing the continent of Europe to America. If that was the case, Europe would still be the epicenter.

better than India for sure!

Again, what are your sources? How do you know? Just your belief that the US is superior despite all evidence to the contrary in this situation? :ally:

Yeah and you know why? Because they don’t test even half as many people as America Sis

Test shortages are worldwide except for a few countries and India has taken radical steps to ensure that people get treatment. :toofunny: They're using the police to try to enforce quarantines. If a case is confirmed in a neighborhood, they have curfews in the whole neighborhood.

The US and India are both testing people less than ideal but you know how I know India doesn't have as much of an outbreak? People with flu like symptoms aren't overcrowding hospitals and dying in the hundreds per day despite India being 5x more populous and much denser.
