New feathered dinosaur species discovered, was one of the last raptors

 A newly-discovered feathered dinosaur that lived 67 million years ago is one of the last known surviving raptor species, researchers have found.

Said dinosaur (Dineobellator notohesperus) and its Asian cousin Velociraptor, belong to a group of dinosaurs known as the dromaeosaurids – commonly referred to as “raptor” dinosaurs following movies like Jurassic Park.

Paleontologists say that the Dineobellator notohesperus, which lived in New Mexico, was a “small, lightly built predator” with a tail function similar to that of a cat. They said the findings, published in the journal Scientific Reports, offer a snapshot of life in the American Southwest near the end of the reign of the dinosaurs.

Researchers chose the official name Dineobellator notohesperus, meaning “Navajo warrior from the Southwest”, in recognition of the people who now live in the same region where the raptor once walked.

While not all of the bones of this dinosaur were recovered, bones from the forearm have quill nobs—small bumps on the surface where feathers would be anchored by ligaments—an indication that Dineobellator bore feathers in life, similar to those inferred for Velociraptor. Its tail also possessed unique characteristics. While most raptors' tails were straight and stiffened with rod-like structures, Dineobellator's tail was rather flexible at its base, allowing the rest of the tail to remain stiff and act like a rudder.

Dineobellator notohesperus adds to scientists' understanding of the paleo-biodiversity of the American Southwest, offering a clearer picture of what life was like in this region near the end of the reign of the dinosaurs.

I know it's referring to balance but I can't help but imagine it raising it high in the air when it's happy or fluffing it up when it's scared

Dromaeosaurids (such as Velociraptor, Deinonychus etc) are characterized by the presence of ossified tendons in the tail forming a sort of a caudal bone shell around vertebrae so that the tail actually worked as a single piece in balancing compensation and immediate veering during running
