All the reasons why these are cringe have already been covered. It's good to see that even the demographics they're pandering too aren't here for it. It's only then these clueless creators will listen. Reclaiming words like snowflake and safespace will never work. Reclaiming so rarely works in general. These words were invented to be derogatory and the people who invented them think reclaiming them is laughable, so don't do it.

I wish, for once, that there were diverse characters whose diversity is completely incidental. That's the best way of normalising differences and seeing that they're nothing weird or to be threatened by. But deliberately creating characters who are defined completely by their sexual orientation/sexual identity is not the way to go. A big part of why the idea of non-binary is so difficult for cisgendered people to get their heads around and why such people are deemed insufferable is because most of us can't imagine why anyone would want to live their lives constantly thinking about their gender identity and letting everyone else know about it. Most straight, cisgendered people don't think about these facets of themselves 24/7 so when some comes along who is like that, we think of them as very strange and attention-seeking. So, the key is to live your life without making a song and dance about it. I know if I were non-binary or any other kind of identity with a very small population, that I would want to see good characters who just so happen to be a bit different from the norm in one area of their lives.

But above all else, we need to stop thinking that unless someone is exactly like us, we can't connect with them. I don't love female characters because they're female like me, I like them because of their personalities and their story arc. And I can even relate to male characters too. I don't need to see constant portrayals of myself everywhere I look to connect to a character. It points to serious problems within yourself if you can only connect to very specific people who belong to your personal tribe.
