Chinese Movie Theatres Reopens As COVID-19 Slows

There's some hopeful news for the film industry coming from China.

As the number of new cases of the coronavirus declines in China, the Chinese government is allowing a few movie theaters to reopen for the first time since the country's theaters were shuttered by decree in January.

On Friday, there were 486 movie theaters back at work, while Saturday the total was upped to 507, local reports say. This reps just 4.5% of the Middle Kingdom exhibition infrastructure and brought in an estimated $4,355 on Saturday, per ticketing platform Maoyan.

The biggest concentration of cinema-goers was in Xinjiang which had previously been the site of the first movie theater to open since the mainland shuttered all screens in January. The other provinces where theaters opened include Inner Mongolia, Sichuan, Qinghai, Henan, Fujian and Guangdong.

Those 500 screens, as Variety notes, ultimately represent less than 5% of all cinemas in China. And it’s perhaps no surprise that Chinese moviegoers are still largely avoiding theaters, likely still shaken by the way this highly contagious virus spread rapidly throughout the country and the world.

These small steps to get China back up and running come at a time when the rest of the world’s movie theaters are essentially all closed for business.

The Hollywood studios have also been approached to bring catalog films back to the Middle Kingdom as it works to get back on its feet. A second wave of titles could come in mid-to-late-April, including Hollywood pics that were cleared pre-shutdown like 1917, Dolittle, Ford V Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, Bad Boys For Life and Sonic The Hedgehog. The hope is that business finds more stability in time for the May 1 holiday.

Ok I ain't any expert but just because its slowing does not mean box office has to open. Just one infected person can cause a mass infection and it will be even worse.

I find it disgusting when people choose profit over human life. They can release it online too.

Well, yeah, but the longer the businesses stay closed, the bigger the hit to the economy, which could also lead to loss of life. I don't think it's really that simple. Now I'm no expert either, but I do hope the Chinese government know what they are doing, they are the ones letting the cinemas open.

Yes it is impacting economy but they can still earn it by selling online. Let's hope it doesn't have much of impact on health

The impact on the economy is more about the theater employees who would be out of a job

reality’s tight if the music is right

they’ve had 2 months of strict lockdowns. Wuhan is still locked out and domestic travel across China was severely restricted.

this isn’t China’s first epidemic. In fact, they handled this much better than SARs.
