Trudeau has responded saying for now a Federal State of emergency won't be declared or hard movement restrictions

Trudeau cited that the degree of infection varies by region and that it's best for each Province to set their own restrictions as they see fit

It's normally up to Provinces to declare their own states of emergency (as many already have) and deploy their own measures as they see fit however the Federal Government can still choose to place a Federal declaration of emergency that would apply to all of Canada

That  seems fair if they can also regulate the movement from province to province

Canada is a lot like the US in the sense that there's a lot of Federal Powers that CAN be exercised if necessary but whenever possible the Government prefers each Province to make their own decisions

Provinces have a high level of autonomy here so even in situations like this a lot of the decisions they are the ones that make how they want to deal with it

But again, if they deem necessary, Trudeau and the Federal Government can still choose to place their own Federal Restrictions movement within the Nation (as they did with border already)

Municipal lockdowns should be in effect, in my opinion at least:awkney: i live in London and there's still CONSTANT traffic around the city with people just walking around downtown going on cute lil strolls as if there isn't a pandemic going on and as if 3 (i think its 4 now) people in the city have tested positive - with probably hundreds more isolating because they have symptoms.

I also keep hearing people talk about how they're taking roadtrips out of the city to Toronto or beach towns on Lake Huron because they "have time now". Sis if yall dont stay home rn is2g

They should preemptively enact a lockdown to stop any potential spread and be one of the countries that was barely hit by COVID-19

The mayor of Toronto was pissed because Toronto put in their own lockdown measures that go beyond the minimums that the Province of Ontario set and some people aren't listening

For exame this EB Games store stayed open after the city mandated all non-essential businesses close and he dragged the sh*t out of them

He's like "games aren't an essential business and they aren't listening etc". I mean id be mad too if I was him :enigma:

I mean, pretty much every Province already put in restrictions anyway

Restaurants, gatherings, bars, clubs are already banned in pretty much every Province

The next step would be to shut down factories and other businesses but I honestly thing that should be left as a last resort given the severe economic impacts

I really think everything should close besides essential services and grocery stores for like 2, maybe 3 weeks then have a slow bounce back to prevent hordes showing up at malls and making the whole quarantine period worthless.

My one fear with places closing is I worry that they'll all reopen around the same time and get swamped, and that will cause a spike in people catching and spreading the virus

My only concern is that a full shutdown is not going to eliminate the virus and the moment stuff is brought back online the virus will just spread again

We're trying to flatten the curve so ppl don't all get sick at once and overwhelm the healthcare system that's the goal now but pretty much every expert agrees that lockdowns mostly slow the spread it's not going to eliminate it

So the way I see it, the extremely severe of economic impacts of complete lockdowns should only be done if and when the situation requires it other wise ud have to keep doing it for the next year till a vaccine is out

If a Country is able to manage its cases and healthcare needs with a partial lockdown but not entire lockdown, I'd say it's best to do it that way

It would be worth the economic damage of a full shutdown if there was half a chance of killing out the virus but we already know it doesn't work that way so since restrictions are instead about controling of the pace of spread and flattening curve enough for health system to manage, governments have to be strategic about when to implement full shutdowns... Not just randomly do it

the UK is still not on a total lockdown either :saladga:

Is the UK Centralized like most of Europe or Decentralized like US & Canada?

I assume England, Scotland and Whales each have their autonomies. What about regions within those regions?

The UK is among the most centralised countries in Europe on many fronts, but nations (excl. England) have devolved administrations that are able to implement their own restrictions (Scotland banned mass gatherings and closed schools before those were recommended by Westminster, for example).

I am still convinced that the approach the UK is taking is the most pragmatic one, and is the one that many other countries will eventually have to adopt; the government has recently published all the evidence, models etc. on which its strategy is based, and I recommend anyone with even a passing interest in the virus to read through everything. Would be nice to see other governments display the same degree of transparency.

So what's the strategy exactly?

A lot of people where I live are still taking it like a complete joke meanwhile there are over 400 confirmed cases in my province (which is very low on a global scale, but still). I don’t know what the solution is but very severe restrictions being put in place.
