You can’t do that to a single messaging platform without doing it to all of them. This isn’t really a solution. That’s the entire point of my comment in the first place. If you target platforms you will simply destroy that platform and the behavior will quickly move to a different one. What do you mean “do nothing”? Law enforcement already investigates these actions, which are already illegal. Doing nothing is literally not even on the table.

Nikolai Barrow 1,337
This is part of a trend from over the last couple decades. Both Bush and Obama increased warrantless wiretapping. But this is a whole new level. Privacy is a human right once we start loosing our fundamental rights authoritarianism is just around the corner. The thing is that it wouldn't necessarily help stop things such as child abuse or sex trafficking. Sure there would be national headlines about big missions to stop these cases, and they would attribute it to this new bill, but that's not the reasoning behind bills such as this. As mentioned before it is used to data mine and sell information. The potential to abuse this bill is too high. An example of this is in Australia, where the government can now use the anti-encryption law in order to get access to journalists' communications. Something like this in the U.S. would be devastating, as the Freedom of the Press is put into question and the safety and anonymity of whistleblowers is sacrificed. Additionally, I can guarantee you there is stealthy language built into this bill that will allow the U.S. to not just monitor its citizens, but everyone world wide. This would involve language that any U.S. based company would need to comply or that anything stored in servers in the U.S. would be subject to the bill's provisions. Although this could assist in counter-terrorism, it can be used against us and other nations in general as well. Lastly, look to the FBI/Apple encryption dispute that stemmed from a terrorist attack in San Bernardino. Although the FBI was looking to have a terrorist subject's phone unlocked by Apple, Apple gave all information it could under the All Writs Act. This bill is looking to expand on that, but the potential for misuse is alarming. Apple says it has no back-door into encrypted material and the FBI tried to force Apple to build such tools. Apple refused to do so, and my guess this bill is the answer to that. If such a tool is built, anyone can gain access to that tool, since it then exists. That means people who were never meant to gain access to your data can have it. Imagine if a terrorist organization gained access to a tool that can extract encrypted information. This wouldn't just mean selling your data, but also potentially weaponizing it.
HorusRa2 5,005
I think you guys need to take another reflection here. The entire point is that this could lead to misuse of government power. It’s an authoritarian nightmare is what it is. And if you think the government is going to self-regulate itself and not misuse data that it has access to, I have a bridge to sell you. For all of y’all talking about Trump and him being a racist fascist and all that, you seem to be all too eager to give him weapons. Also, once this is established it’s a lot harder to roll it back. This is another pandora’s box.
