That's good. Here in Canada EI benefits are only 55% and to my knowledge they didn't increase that figure they only reduced bariors to qualify and technicalities like removing the waiting week

 

Although they were talking $800 bi weekly payments for those laid off by virus so for a lot of people that's over 55% so I guess it depends on what circumstances u were laid off

To my understanding, this isn't a 'benefit' for people that have been laid off work. Rather, it is a plea to businesses to not lay people off.

So, if for example, somebody isn't able to work because they are a bartender (and bars are henceforth closed), the government will pay 80% of their usual wages to prevent businesses from collapsing. 

Also, it seems that those businesses will be expected to continue paying wages, which can then be reclaimed from the government as opposed to the government giving the money to workers directly.

That's true. I'm self-employed, and so if I continue to use clients at the rate I'm losing them, I'm  left with nothing. I can apply for Universal Credit which is £90 a week; not enough to live off.

I'm self-employed too and didn't know this, I didn't hear them mentioned yesterday about setting up something to help self-employed people though

until there is a vaccine, life will be very different  social distancing will be the norm until there is a vaccine and rapid treatment of the disease. So no Family, Friends or Tinder for a while
