CautiousLurker 19,709
Ann Reardon just posted another film debunking 'how to' videos - I really like these, first of all because Ann has a very friendly disposition and I think is fun to watch... second of all, it probably never would have occurred to me that there are people who make these kinds of videos solely for views and that as a result someone who watches them might genuinely get hurt, so yeah, thought I'd share cuz I think more people should be aware of this... Now, in this particular video she also had her husband talk a bit about people behind the videos and the company that runs the channel(s) in question, because recently people noticed some of their content featured weirdly anti-american and pro-russian sentiments, and... of course the whole thing is owned by some russian guys... Am I annoyed by this? Yes... Am I surprised? No... I still wasn't sure whether to tag this as science or politics cuz it does get political at the end, but I think it's still more focused on food science so... the science tag stays... I think... It might not seem like a big deal, but in one of the videos Ann demonstrated how some of their 'hacks' can result in people getting seriously injured, like, getting 3rd degree burns... Also this does pose a question as to what should people do when a media company acquires such great outreach and decides to use it to spread misinformation It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!
Creyk 18,639
I have been a victim of this before. I watched a cooking video and then prepared the food from the video exactly as it was recommended, but in the end the food sucked.

Yeh, I'd imagine something like that would suck and I can see how people would assume they did something wrong and it wasn't the instructions cuz... unless it's something obvious, people just wouldn't think something like this is made up for the purpose of marketability... Fortunately for me, I don't cook It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!
