COVID-19 is not comparable to those others because its rate of infection o is so high and so many people are asymptomatic carriers. We have not seen anything spread at this rate with such severe implications in our lifetimes. I don't think we will see global shutdown every 10 years. Scientists have predicted local shutdowns will likely continue for at least 18 months after the peak of the virus. Meaning a city that has positive cases will shutdown to protect from spread. A virus is not something you can contain. Hopefully we will eventually have a vaccine to help limit the transmission. But until then what else can be done? I seriously hope not too but I wouldn't hold my breath. The amount of movement now globally is not comperable even to the end of last century when people like me were little kids So anytime something very infectious (or even less infectious if not caught right away) the risks of a global pandemic have surged My point is just because it's been a long time since the last global pandemic doesn't mean going forward the frequency will remain that low. It will probably happen way more frequently now so I think we should try to come up with more ways of dealing with it or be more prepared etc Again shutdowns have a huge impact. I think it would be beyond lazy to just leave it at that and not try to come up with less damaging measures for when stuff like this comes up. And just because nothing is coming to mind right now doesn't mean there isn't another possible solution. Franch Toast 27,745
I can't with all the ableism and selfishness in this thread. Not all people immunocompromised are over 60. Also, guess what, there are young, healthy people catching this who end up needing ventilators too. The whistleblower in China who died from it, Dr. Li Wenliang, was only 34 I believe. Additionally, who is going to care for those people y'all want to cordone off? Lots of health aides, nurses, doctors, etc. are under the age of 60, and as we've seen, even taking proper precautions, medical workers have contracted the disease, so presumably they could also pass it on. Does that mean anyone who takes care of senior citizens or immunocompromised people would have to be cordoned off from society too, lest they infect the vulnerable by picking it up from the rest of y'all? We also don't know yet what kind of lasting damage this virus does to someone's body. Why don't we look at countries that have done a much better job at handling the virus and learn from them – Singapore, Taiwan, and even South Korea (they've gotten that mess largely under control). Maybe it's too late in this case, but it can be helpful in future situations. I'm concerned about the economy as well, but I'm also concerned about people's lives. He certainly is responsible for defunding the programs that should have been in place to give us a better start on this. We are severely behind on tests and the infrastructure needed to handle a pandemic. Trump ignored the blaring warning signs, dismissed the huge red flags and made catastrophic decisions. The federal government is failing the states and the American people. That’s on Trump.

You didn't answer my question though. If it's okay for you to risk your life, it's okay, it's your choice. But in doing so, you put others lives at risk, who could get the virus from you. Or don't you even care about them? that's why we should all stay home. We don't get sick, and we don't pass the virus on to other people.

Governments aren’t closing schools because of car crashes. All restaurants, movie theaters, shopping centers, sports teams, etc aren’t stopping because of fear of cars crashing through restaurants. You can only stop the madness by following the guidelines, not by thinking you know best.
