Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged Britons to avoid pubs, clubs and theatres and stop non-essential travel in an effort to reduce the impact of the coronavirus.

On Monday,  Mr Johnson set out the need for "drastic action" to tackle the "fast growth" of the coronavirus as cases rose to 1,543 in the UK.

As part of the measures, anyone living in a household with somebody who has either a persistent cough or fever must now also isolate themselves for 14 days.

All people should avoid gatherings and crowded places, while people who are vulnerable - including those who are elderly - will need to undertake even more drastic measures.

Chief medical officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty, said measures to tackle the spread of the disease would need to be in place for a "prolonged period".

He added: "This is going to go on for some time. We should not be under any illusions that 'if we just do this for a couple of weeks that is sufficient'."

It comes as the death toll from coronavirus in the UK hit 55 on Monday.

The PM said groups particularly vulnerable to Covid-19 - those aged over 70 and those with pre-existing health condition - will be asked to stay at home "for around 12 weeks" by the weekend.

He will have the blood of thousands if not millions on his hands.

I am shocked at his ignorance.

There's been like 7K deaths total, I think the suggestion people have been making about millions in one country is a bit unrealistic...

It takes a lot of days to kill its host. The people dying now are the ones that were first infected. And are of course mostly elderly people or people with pre existing conditions. UK's stance on this has been condemned worldwide.
