Constructive Criticism: Stupid Love

There's a million threads on here that I didn't read, so please don't come at me for my personal opinion.

I will start with what I love. The song is great, and makes me feel good and wanna dance. It doesn't really captivate me lyrically, but it has a great instrumental and Gaga sounds amazing. I lived for the promotional billboards, the single cover, and the Chromatica font along with it. It felt very modern yet nostalgic, fresh for Gaga, and forward. Then...

The video. The video took it back ten steps in my opinion. It's not even the iPhone thing, it just felt low-budget with the unflattering neon colors thrown all around each other. Also, the 'storyline' felt like it was geared towards children with how cringe-campy it was. I'm only disappointed with the video because I've seen Gaga deliver camp that still felt forward and modern, and unlike anything other artists are doing. I do feel the yes-men in the Haus of Gaga are dragging her down, because a consistent pattern with Gaga's projects to me is incredible ideas and less-than-great execution (hey Enigma).

This is the same reason I'm not really here for an Arianna collab. Ariana is successful in her own right and can sing her ass off, but compared to more seasoned female artists she is what I would classify as the McDonald's of pop. I just felt like there was so much promise with a great track and lovely visuals but the video kinda reminded me that with Gaga recently execution isn't all that great. I might not be a manager or in the industry, but I do know that there is no reason lesser artists are putting out more polished projects. Gaga (or her team?) should get it together in that sense.

It’s almost like she’s been going for a cheesy camp aesthetic on purpose or sumthing

I agree with many of your opinions, and think you're pretty brave for sharing them here. It's definitely true that LG's served much better 'campy' MV's before, but I've decided to not judge the entire era's videos and features from that alone. That being said, the Ariana collab will be a huge modern step in Gaga's career, because lately Ariana's been quite successful. Our girl's (hopefully) got some tricks up her sleeves, and I feel like Ari featured on a track will be the first of many.  We'll see.

The song sounds like it could released by any mainstream basic singer and that’s the tea :tea:

REALITY

As for the lyrics of SL, it's no secret that it's not her greatest work, but I really do think that people are exaggerating when they talk about how "basic" they are. Sure, the pre chorus and the chorus don't provide a lot of lyrical substance, but they're not really supposed to. Like Gaga said in that NRJ interview, the song itself is supposed to be simple and fun. That said, the verses I think are very well written. They are on par with her other work.

As for the video, when I first watched it, I had a similar reaction. I wasn't too fond of it, and it did look cheaper to me than her videos before, but I think you just have to take it for what it is and appreciate it. Do I wish that there was more of a storyline? Yeah. Do I wish that there were more diverse locations than just her in a desert? Yeah. But I think we just got to accept the video for its weird, low-budget campiness. That isn't necessarily a bad thing either, though. I think that the video is just supposed to be a fun little thing where people can be awed by the bright, neon colors and the choreography. I don't think there's really anything more than that.

That said, I would have to wait on the Ariana video to see if there's any difference in quality. If the Ariana video is of a similar quality, then I would think that that's the look she's going for for this era, however, if it looks substantially better, then I would just pin it on an SL-specific thing.

Y'all need to get used to her more mainstream songs this era. Cause you're only going to get more of them.

Gaga's already said that her goal for this album is to make music a "big chunk of the world can listen to". If that and the fact that she's doing a collab with Ariana Grande  doesn't tell you that she's moving in a more mainstream-pop direction this era, then I don't know what does.

That isn't to say that all of Chromatica's songs will be basic though. I think that even though SL does sound more mainstream, it also sounds distinctly like Gaga. Chromatica will be the same.

For me, nothing in the video is cringy. The second teaser was cringy indeed, but fortunatelly, in the actual video she's just dancing, nothing more. But yeah, it's a cheap video in the same quality as PI. Her last good MV was G.U.Y. And the song, it's good but nothing special.

I hope you get constructive criticism in this thread and not a bunch of catty comments towards Gaga's work, condescending tone, and the beloved use of the word trash.

I think one reason many people find the video cringy is because of the styling and fashion. I mean the green tribe are wearing plants, and none of them is wearing something that fits the desert backdrop imo.

however, i do love the red and black ones, they give me a less cheap and more Gaga vibe

But she’s clearly having fun and that’s what counts

PI had a great video, tbh. The concept and the quality of the video were great. The problem was the execution. It was just too  intense.
