ADVENTURE 856 Posted March 13, 2020 Share Posted March 13, 2020 As many of you know, the Coronavirus has been taking a huge toll on the economy in general. The Walt Disney Company is going through some major down turns due to the virus. All Disney parks around the world will be closed by the end of the weekend. The new Mulan live action movie has been pushed back until further notice. If you are a Disney fan, you know that the company has seen some dark times in the past. When Michael Eisner was CEO from 1984 to 2005 he notoriously cut spending to the theme parks leaving entire parks being under built and underfunded. Cut to today and the company is on top of their game. They acquired Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilms and 20th Century Fox. They have invested billions in their theme parks and have a trajectory to keep going even further. It is going to be interesting to see what effects the Coronavirus will have on the company moving forward. Their have already been large company spending cuts and after the news today we might see a sad era for Disney. What thoughts do you guys have for Disney’s future? Because I believe that got investors in the company really nervous. And now with the new guy replacing Bob things could get really bad. Also, all the new things being built in the parks for the 50th anniversary could either be canceled or limited with budget costs. I mean, they're basically renovating half of EPCOT. Considering these economic struggles could layoff workers in the future, I'd say it's pretty important that Disney manages to keep all their projects on task instead of having to shut down to save. And that goes for basically every business in the industry beyond Disney. If this economic decline continues into the year, it will be disastrous for the working class. With the cruise line and the theme park business on hold, and with their slate of films being pushed indefinitely, they'll have to cut their spending down the line. I'm guessing they'll try to get some of the recent blockbusters on Disney+ to get as many new customers as possible. They could potentially shorten Onward's theatrical release, put it on Disney+ in a couple of weeks and advertise it as a big selling point for the service. But yeah, historically the theme parks (their cash cow) are the first to suffer from these things. Other than that, yeah, they'll probably be fine. That would be interesting if they did some early releases to Disney+. It has been a huge success for them. The most unfortunate part of the budget getting cut is they start with cutting pay roll first. One of my friends who lives in Beijing and works at Disney Land there, was sent home over a month ago. They have paid him and all their employees the whole time, even without work. The company is vowing to pay all cast members across the board, while the company's parks are closed. Say what you want about them being Billionaires, but they A)have the money and B) are doing the right thing by their employees. I'm actually happy for them for being a role model to other huge companies. Not all companies will have the finance to do the same, but good for Disney.
