I completely disagree. TFM is her best album.

Joanne is a cute project and it does stand out from the rest of her discography (C2C and ASIB aside).

but you are entitled to your own wrong opinion :huntyga:

Love Joanne and except for 3 songs, I don't listen to TFM anymore either, yet most of Joanne.

Listening to the whole album (Deluxe) from start to finish makes me feel better than any therapy session I've ever had.

Sinner's Prayer and Just Another Day deserved better :selena:

I thought I was the only one who preferred Joanne over The Fame Monster. I really do find myself listening to Joanne a lot more than TFM.

I think both of them are her best works to date. TFM is her pop-weird-sound signature peak, the essence of Gaga as fans know her. Joanne is her most grown-up, personal and cohesive record, and the cleaner sound is timeless. I think it was necessary for Gaga to show her vulnerable side, and to remind people that she is a human being. Also, from my personal point of view, as I grew up I lost interest in dance pop music about riding disco sticks, and I think many old school fans experienced that too

I mean, if you enjoy following Gaga - the artist - and the evolution of her career, than putting a stamp on the end of her transformation from "over the top, sensationalist popstar" to "well-rounded, cross-genre vocalist and artist" was needed ca. 2016, and it allowed her to transition into her redefining role in ASIB as an actress and a musician in the eyes of the GP. The post-ARTPOP period of stripped back Gaga, focusing on her vocals, technique, jazz roots, piano, etc. had to lead to some kind of climax, and no, C2C was not it. Joanne served its purpose as a vehicle to showcase what had been accomplished during that period, a full album of cohesive, more organic, and less commercial material.

It doesn't surprise me that a lot of people find it an easy or relatable body of work, because I think that was its ultimate objective. A chart-topping album focused on her artistic abilities only was what allowed for the mega-success of ASIB to happen. Had Joanne been more experimental or commercially driven, it would have once again put "Lady Gaga" at the forefront of the conversations and overshadowed her media presence pre-ASIB.

I don't know why there is an obsession of figuring out which album is "best." They each served a specific purpose in her career trajectory. I very much disagree that Joanne was not a concept, or that it was any more personal than the themes she explored on all of her prior albums. It is also my least favorite for the reason it is many other's favorite: none of the songs provide the 'highs' you get when you listen to tracks obviously produced for the purposes of becoming a hit single commercially. Nothing is offensive, but nothing is - for me - as exciting as Bad Romance or even as raw as Speechless.

I don't think Joanne was ever meant to be a commercial smash. On any other album, Million Reasons would have gotten the Brown Eyes/Speechless/Dope treatment; if commercial success was a major concern, they would have released a 3rd single when MR hit #4 post-Superbowl. Or, released a new version with ~3 new tracks. Instead, they waited and months later, dropped 'The Cure' as a standalone which just distanced her from the era.

Nothing wrong with loving either of these albums. I personally like when she goes full-on pop and tries to push those boundaries with songs that she is fully committed to in a commercial, WW-smash kind of way. To me, her hunger for the fame was still so evident in TFM but she was also more vulnerable and her songwriting and vocals had progressed so well from TF. I wish so much she waited a bit longer and made it ~12-14 tracks with 4 singles.

Such a great song :nooo:

OT: Not when DITD exists. That song could make all of Joanne album embarrassed of its existence in the blink of an eye :tony: .

Spoiler

And I say this despite me liking this album really much!

Ew, David!
