Yes I said it: Madame X is my all-time favourite Madonna album!

I wanted to make this thread since I feel like this is a very unpopular opinion under Madge stans and the album is extremely underrated imo. So this thread is kinda meant as an appreciation thread for my favourite Madonna album!

The weeks leading up to the era: A little bit of backstory with me and Madonna. I became a fan/stan in 2018 and she quickly became one of my main faves! I'm so obsessed with her whole discography and she is truly the definition of pop. Every album/era is completely different from the other. I love every album of hers in it's own way and she has one for every mood.

But I hear you thinking? How is Madame X is your all-time favourite while popular masterpieces like Ray of Light, Confessions on a Dancefloor, Erotica, American Life, Like a Prayer etc are right there? Well, first of all I think part of it has to do with it being the first album cycle I experienced as a fan. My expectations were very high and I was so excited for this new era Her teasing on Instagram and Twitter seems to be going on forever and it built a lot of excitement. So when we got the very first visuals of the album I was shook I just loved everything about it. I'm a sucker for Latin influenced music so when I heard the album was gonna have Latin/Portuguese influences I was extremely excited. Already a great start!

Leadsingle: Then we got the leadsingle, which is always an defining moment in an album cycle. The promo photo was already a serve from the start. I was counting the days and couldn't wait to listen to it for the first time on Beats1. At first I was like 'interesting!'. Medellín isn't a hardhitter at first, but the longer I was listening, the more I started to love it. At the end of my first listen I already liked it, eventhough I did not like  the 'one, two cha cha cha'. The same day I streamed the song on repeat and it became better every listen It became one of my most played tracks in 2019 and one of my to-go Madonna song. The production is define, the 'one two cha cha cha' is so catchy and Maluma's voice is so sexy. 

Promo singles and album release: Every promo single that followed was a serve. I Rise being my favourite. Future was a no from the start, but even that one grew a lot on me! I love it now. Such a bop. I really liked this type of album rollout since it kept us fed during the wait for the album. It was so exciting! The day the album was gonna drop was amazing too. Listening to God Control for the first time was an experience! Like, she did that! Actually it's save to say that God Control is my favourite Madonna song of all time! I truly loved/liked every song on the album upon first listen. Some more than others, but I wouldn't skip anything. I had the album on repeat for weeks and just like Medellín the album became better every listen. Almost one year later I can safely say it's my favourite Madonna album. The production is hard-hitting and very unique and that's exactly what I love in albums. Madonna's work with Mirwais is always amazing and he did not disappoint on Madame X! He is the producer behind my second favourite Madonna album after all (American Life) The album has a very nice mix of Latin American bops, experimental songs and beautiful ballads. It has so many genres and cultures mixed together, yet it's cohesive and feels like a whole body of work, rather than a few random songs put together. The lyrics and themes of the songs were very impressive too. She talked about a lot of important issues like gun violence and it gave me major American Life vibes. 

And can we talk about the visuals for a minute? Wow, she did THAT! From the video's (5!) to the photoshoots, she served! I live for the baroque styled photo's. Everything was high quality and that 40 years in her career. I am so impressed! My favourite being the God Control video!

Favourite songs: I don't skip any song on the album, but of course I do have songs I love the most... Those are: Medellín, God Control, Killers Who Are Partying, Extreme Occident, Faz Gostoso, Bitch I'm Madonna, I Don't Seach I Find, Looking for Mercy, I Rise and Ciao Bella.

Conclusion: So yes, I'm can proudly say I am a huge Madame X stan and it's one of my favourite albums of all time  My favourite Madonna album before Madame X was American Life or Erotica. Both are still in my Top 3. As for the others I think it's hard to rank them since it depends on my mood. But Confessions and Ray of Light are definitely all times faves too!
Sadly the Madame X Tour was very controversial and it didn't do the album justice... If I had to change one thing about the era it would be that.

I disagree and Madame X is my lowest ranked album because I personally did not like the vocal productions. Madonna is a decent singer, and some of the songs felt very overproduced to me, which had me giggling when I shouldn’t have been. I stopped following the album cycle after the Pulse re-enacting music video. At that point I removed the album from my apple music entirely and haven’t gone back at all. I think if the music video hadn’t happened, and the production had been stripped back just a bit, I would have loved the album. Except dark ballet.... that was very not my thing.

I agree that the album is 100% a serve and one of her best but it’s not my favorite of hers. That would go to Ray Of Light every time, all the time. Nothing will ever beat that amazing experience of listening to it for the first time and that euphoric feel I had when I finished it, just pure awe at how masterful it all was.

My top 3 would go like this:

1. Ray of Light

2. Confessions on a Dance Floor

3. Madame X

Madame X was an incredible listen as well tho, especially coming from 2 lackluster albums and another great albeit forgettable one. Madame X was truly like an artistic awakening for Madonna, and she hasn’t been this inspired and creative since COAFD. The moment I got to Looking for Mercy I decided it was definitely one of my favorite albums of hers.
