Not everyone will have serious symptoms or need to be hospitalized. But to compare, the swine flu affected around 61 million Americans. Also, "CDC estimates that influenza has resulted in between 9 million – 45 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths annually(2017-2018 season)" And this is with half of Americans not even getting vaccinated. I think you're right. Germany has 6 deaths on 2745 reported infections. The US has 40 deaths on 1650 infections. I think that's a sign that Germany is testing asymptotic people well (just like South Korea, 66 deaths on 7869 infected), while the US (40 deaths on 1650 infected) is lacking. There's no reason why the ratio of deaths to infected should differ so much among western countries. The US may lack healthcare accessibility, but that really isn't enough to explain the large amount of deaths. Good thing the US is still a big country, so even if, say, the real number of people infected is 2500, that would still mean they're only at 1/5 of where France is (corrected for population), which means that the US has a few days left to implement the inevitable measures. Another good thing the US has going for them is good opposition. Nobody really trusts Trump besides a few loons, so (at least that's what I've heard) most universities closed by themselves, and big events cancelled without waiting for the government to say they should. Here, everyone is impatiently waiting for the government to finally announce what their "healthcare experts" told them, because people (including those in important decisions, so not just loons) generally trust the government, and otherwise they don't want to be seen as panicking or disrespecting the "expert-based" government approach. What this leads to? Cinemas are still open, people are still going out tonight and primary schools, kindergartens and high schools are still open tomorrow. Yeah, states, cities, universities, etc. are taking their own measures here, which will help in the efforts to contain the spread. Hopefully it's not too bad.
