The bloated Great Lakes have hit an all-time February high in 4 out 5 of the Great Lakes

 

 

Lake Michigan/Huron alone (which are measured together given their major connection) have 4.8 Trillion Gallons of water more than the old February record which was already a major record to begin with

 

Lake Erie has risen another foot (12 inches) in the last year.

 

Lake Superior the largest lake broke new records but by only 1 inch

 

Lake Ontario the only lake not to break a new record was only 6 inches from a new record

 

A Cargo shipping ban into great lakes from Atlantic Ocean remains in effect given unsafe rushing outflows

There isn’t that much located right near the shore on Superior. Maybe I’m wrong but it couldn’t be causing that much damage? Plus this means more drinking water for everyone

also its not sea level waters but lake level waters so that means that probably it isnt causing of climate change( ice melting and etc.)

Shorelines have already been eroding because of this including houses falling in and a lot of beaches have shrunk to a fraction the size it was 

 

And it appears to be. Global warming at first was slowly drying up the lakes since 1980s but the trend reversed to the opposite extreme starting in 2012 because we crossed a threshold where warming started changing the trends completely

 

It warmed up enough for example that in the winter the air is more damp on average for example (very cold air gets dry with no humidity) so evaporation in the winter has reduced despite reduced ice coverage

 

Precipitation has also surged in the spring last several years which has more than offset the hotter and drier summers that decades ago were drying up the lakes.

 

A lot of the biggest storms originate from Gulf of Mexico and if Ocean temperatures there rose above a certain threshold that may explain the much bigger rain dumps in the spring

 

In short this was unexpected. Up until 2012 the fear was ever falling levels and would ships even be able to keep carrying cargo because the bottom of ships was getting to close to scrapping the lake floors

 

But in the last 8 years the trend unexpectedly changed and levels gone up almost every year since then and now it's at record levels

 

Experts still disagree if this is a blip in the trend (and lakes long term will go back to drying up) or if the trend has permanently changed. At this point it's not fully clear

 

But I read an article a few weeks ago that many do in fact expect levels to remain bloated the rest of century because precipitation has increased more than evaporation

 

It's kinda the opposite problem most of the world is facing. Fresh bodies around the world have been drying up with warmer temperatures but here the opposite is happening right now

It may be in different ways

 

Our biggest storms originate from Gulf of Mexico which with warming water have created bigger storms with more precipitation especially late winter up till mid spring

 

The warmer winters ironically have also reduced evaporation. Even tho there's less ice coverage, the warmer winters means less dry air (very cold air gets very dry with no humidity)

 

The increased humidity and dampness are reducing evaporation even tho you'd expect the opposite to happen when it's warmer

 

The summers are becoming hotter and drier but it seems like it's not enough to fully offset the increased precipitation and reduced evaporation winter and spring
