Absolutely in love with how you expressed the situation in Azerbaijan

No problem handsome  I've always had a fascination for the peoples of the Caucasus region and i'm low key glad Azerbaijan is having a mini moment on GGD lol (even if it is just in a comedic way sometimes).

I'll reserve my skepticism for this since a lot of places try to appeal to the LGBT community through pop culture and not legislation which is what actually matters... There are a lot of people who will align themselves with LGBT rights suspiciously quickly if it means they can get their money :wtf:

I understand the skepticism but just remember that all movements start with society first and then they make their way into poltics / legislation. LGBTQ+ rights need to become normalized and mainstream before they can ever be officially supported politically. This is a process which takes AGES. This is especially true for developing nations like Azerbaijan which was heavily impacted by it's time in the USSR & by Russia's choke hold.

Unfortunately that's not always how that works out, but if it works out for them in the way you've outlined - great... I was actually gonna use Russia as an example because making gay speech illegal was a relatively recent addition, as well pretty much all media in Russia is state media - they can and have suppressed speech, so... Ultimately the government holds the power, not pop-culture... *sigh* Has Russia ever done anything good, I swear :noparty:

that's so sad to hear tbh. I guess we can be cautiously enthusiastic about progress but always a bit skeptical right? I mean as you mentioned policies can change over night which restrict human rights and all efforts made to advance which is super sad ...

I swear I sometimes wonder how different the world would be if the major split between Russia and Western Europe did not occur. Basically all of Eastern Europe and even a pretty significant part of the Middle East and Central Asia would be so much better in regards to human rights. It's precisely Russia and the West's alienation that is creating so much tension between East & West.

Let's pray for better days and for genuine change. However long it may take.

Oh yeah, with Russia it's pretty bad - there are quite a few documented cases of independent press and journalists vanishing under mysterious circumstances, and Putin straight up boasting about it - it's gross...

OH, last thing I will mention is with pieces of pop culture like this is... I'd encourage people to ask how is this supposed to humanize marginalized groups to the masses - cuz that's the big thing when trying to alter an audience's view point through the media... Does it achieve that by playing into sexualized western stereotypes of those groups, or does it just reinforce the beliefs of conservatives who already view gays as sexually degenerate... It's one thing for people to understand that those images are fantasy that is used to sell a product - it's another for people to assume this is an accurate representation of that community...
