Hair wouldn't have saved anything.

I would've rather Gaga flopped with something like 'HML' than have a hit with that embarrassing, tacky piece of garbage that sounds like it was written by Katy Perry and produced by school children.

People heard it and didn't buy it, which is a bigger issue. It was on during the Thanksgiving Special and actually fell on iTunes after, instead of rising like TEOG/Y&I/etc.

Remember that the album sold about 5 million copies by this time. (I think that's correct, at least). By then, Gaga needed a single that would rope in people that haven't experienced the Born This Way album yet. It's understandable that a non-fan to a very casual listener wouldn't have cared about MTN.

MTN tanked based on its own merits. It was too much of a "grower". I know many people, including myself, who didn't like the song instantly. The song structure was very odd, and the hook / chorus were not catchy enough to be a single. I think Hair or Scheisse would have been a better choice.

Just my opinion.

But this does not mean that I don't absolutely love the song. It's my most played song on iTunes, following Judas.

Judas, on the other hand, should have been a hit, and I believe GaGa and Interscope thought it was going to be the BR 2.0. I'm still upset over that scheisse.

...and that's the story of GaGa's lowest charting songs. (as if the story hasn't been harped on enough :dies: )

Poor Wiz got beat by Taylor. :smh: Second time in a row he misses the #1 slot and ends up at #2. Rihanna finds herself out of the Top 10 in week #3.

Ke$ha is on the way out. Those sales figures are tragic.

And "Marry the Night" underperformed because there was too much Gaga in too little time and people got burnt out. The song had amazing radio updates in the beginning and still peaked at a respectable #14 (probably would have gone higher if programmers had sales as indication that the public wanted to hear it); it would have smashed under normal circumstances.

I have absolutely no regrets about thinking MTN was a good 5th single choice.

It's not like anything else would have done better. "MTN" was the second most popular non-single in sales after "Yoü and I" when the album came out.

Ke$ha still has those single-worthy tracks from her sophomore album. She can pull a Katy Perry approach in terms of single releases.

It WAS the best choice at the time.

MTN would have become a chart success if it was released as the second single. If anything, it could have given Gaga her second consecutive single to debut at the summit of the HOT 100 chart, and more importantly, keep the momentum going for the entire BTW era. Oh well.
