US Charts Discussion (Gaga single tracking: August)

Actually, I heard that Taylor's team is now trying to avoid that, since Red is NOT available as mp3 format on Amazon. Not sure if it's true though

Probably Apple or Target demanded that Amazon be cut out in return for some other kind of exclusive deal.

Otherwise, I`m sure they could demand Amazon sell it for some minimum price on condition for letting them offer it.

Taylor has her exclusive deals with target, which Gaga turned down for political reasons.

the only way that will happen is if SHE listens to the GP and puts out fun catchy songs. not experimental EDM songs

Taylor success isn`t build on appealing to the lowest common denominator.

It`s from building and keeping a rabidly loyal fanbase, plus good marketing tricks.

Taylor Swift has huge cross-over appeal and she's America's Sweetheart, I've always known she would slay album sales wise but not this hard :rip: Meanwhile Gaga's main audience are mostly pop music fans who don't buy albums so the fact that BTW sold 700K without the Amazon deal was still very impressive, but I don't see her doing it ever again.

It could happen. Remember that Gaga may be a pop star, but she has built a massive Little Monster fan base. Gaga is the pop album exception, imo.

Her first week sales would definitely be huge for a pop album but I don't think she would touch a million. Probably ~600K

She gained a lot, A LOT of fans in my country from the Born This Way era. And I need to point out that the people in my country is very religious and some lift their eyebrows when Judas was released. Maybe she scared a few of the GP, but she can bring them back with powerful chorus and catchy hooks like she always did before (JD, PF, specially BR). And at the end of the day, the fans are the ones that buy albums and singles.

That being said, I don't think why that can't be a common denominator in the rest of the world, including US.

Another funny fact: Alejandro is probably her most succesful song here, along with bad romance, telephone and born this way.

It doesn't really affect much what she does in her videos, if you can relate to a song, and if it is dancey and funny without being offensive, she will do fine.

----

OT: Congrats to Taylor on her slayage, it's incredible. I didn't know she was that big in the US and I was surprised, because you barely hear about her over here.

Agreed. ARTPOP's first week sales are really difficult to predict. BTW was coming off of huge hype and a massive era so numbers like 700k+ were expected. Right now Gaga has been really quiet and there's very little hype at the moment. I'd predict a more conservative 400k-500k first week for ARTPOP, which is really good for a pop album.

Taylor is still very local compared to other popstars. Loud and Speak Now sold nearly the same amount WW (around 5.7-6 mil). That should speak volumes considering that Rihanna is often labeled as a singles artist in the US. But still, her commercial success in the US is unbelievable. I'd die if she opens with 1 mil+ with her next album. :rip:

I think ARTPOP will have a really good opening week. If she releases like 2 WW singles before the album drops and they both smash and are really good and radio plays them a lot then the GP will be behind her and will possibly want to give ARTPOP a listen. Judas killed a lot of momentum that should've been kept by a second single.

In addition: Red's metacritic score went down a point or a few points to 76 with another added review. And it's user score is down to 4.1 :eww:

Do you guys think it's possible for ARTPOP's lead single to debut at #1 on BB with the new rules? I think it's doubtful...

It's really difficult to say. If she releases it on a Monday with a radio real, then she could risk debuting really low from the radio airplay alone like Taylor did. Debut it later on in the week and she may not have enough in sales.

She needs to do one of the following:

- Monday single release with radio deal beginning on Wednesday

- Release both on Monday and get a crappy debut, but a guaranteed #1 the second week

TayTay did it

She debuted at 70 something from airplay :P
