RAMROD 109,690 Posted March 5, 2020 Share Posted March 5, 2020 As far as name goes, there are big 5 right now: - James Wan (Stygian, Dream Home, Saw, The Conjuring, Insidious, The curse of La Llorona) - Guillermo Del Toro (Cronos, The Strain, The Devil's Backbone, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark) - Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us, Candyman) - Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) - Jennifer Kent (Babadook, The Nightingale) - Andy Muschietti (Mama, It, It: Chapter 2) They elevated horror genre into brown nose and full of style that are welcomed by many more people in turns. But the questions remains: which one of these are your favourite and why? Although I would also add Fede Alvarez, who directed the (amazing) Evil Dead remake and Don’t Breathe. I don’t really consider Guillermo Del Toro a horro director btw. More of a dark fantasy one. I've been a big Del Toro fan for years (since Pan's Labyrinth) and I am a growing fan of Peele's directorial work outside his comedy. I thought horror-comedy had to be intentionally B and ironic and campy (think Scary Movie, Scream, old school Tyler Perry etc) but Peele brings clever legitimacy to the genre I also didn't know a woman directed The Babadook and Hereditary. That's such a rarity, now I am really interested in seeing those movies. One modern horror movie that had a huge impact on me was 2015's "The VVitch" directed by Robert Eggers. It didn't scare me so much as fascinate me. I kind of wanted to BE Thomasin, being possessed by the devil and dancing nude in the moonlight seemed like an improvement over being an Amish farm peasant to me! He made such great stylistic choices. The whole movie was so artistic. It reminded me of David Lynch. Super excited to watch Eggers' latest effort "The Lighthouse!" My old cat is a tough man, but i cant deny the way he bites my hand and he stabs me, he grabs me by my heart <3 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Anderson123 38,467 Posted March 5, 2020 Share Posted March 5, 2020 Leigh Whanell and James Wan have really made great horror movies but right now I feel the holy trinity is Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar), Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse) and Jennifer Kent (Babadook, Nightingale). Jordan Peele deserves the success but I feel like the ones I mentioned have made superior films. As for Guillermo Del Toro, I feel like he’s on another level, finally getting some recognition but has been making amazing stuff for more than 20 years.
