I think ARTPOP era truly scared the heck out of her and made her do the whole "I dont care about hits" etc..almost as self defense because she didn't want to set herself up for draggings and disappointment in general. Now she seems to have built her confidence up again and is publicly showing she is humbly ambitious again in terms of musical success. I love that.
