Should be closer to 40 g. What kind of bean are you looking at? On top of a salad, that's a perfectly fine meal. Also are you female? 1,200 calories is extremely low for a man. I also want to point out that the fiber content in beans helps to reduce the amount of calories that you actually absorb (of your entire meal, not just of the beans themselves), and are generally good for your health overall. Google. Search beans, and it'll show you on the right nutrition facts for different types of beans. Also keep in mind that plant-based food does not provide complete protein. It provides incomplete protein (lacking some of the 22 types of the amino acids you need to build muscle), so eating beans alone won't be enough, you'll have to combine with other sources of protein. Bottom line it's very very difficult to preserve muscle mass on a vegetarian diet. Is it possible? Yes. Can you do it? Depends on many factors, including how much you can eat the day, whether you have a personal nutritionist that will optimize your diet to make sure you're getting all of the 22 types of AA every day etc... I've seen its effect first hand on some of my friends. They lost most muscle mass and have become mostly "skinny type" with some tiny bits of muscle. This is why I don't judge when people don't go vegetarian. If you're a woman and want to be skinny it's actually a good idea. If you're a man and want to look ripped, forget it. It'll be very hard, especially when you don't have enough muscle already.

The amount of essential amino acids are provided by literally any diet you can think of that provides for more than 1 food source. The myth of the incomplete protein leading to less muscle has long been debunked. Also, the amount of protein you need to build muscle is not that much (less than 30 grams MAXIMUM per meal, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19699838). All the bean types have about 600 calories and 40 grams of protein in a cup (and considering that 40 grams is too much anyways, you certainly don't need to eat a cup per meal). What you are looking at when you search "bean" is baked beans (which is mostly sugar, hence the low protein count). Search for actual specific types of beans to get real information. Vegetarians and vegans can easily preserve or increase their muscle mass due to quiet easily being able to meet daily protein requirements. To think otherwise is plainly and simply being misinformed. Actually 40 grams is not too much. I need 130 grams a day. And I'm not going to eat two cups of beans a day, capping my caloric intake with just 80 grams of incomplete protein. Bad plan. Arguably unhealthy. You're free to try it if you want, but I don't think it's something I'm interested in. Being fully vegan doesn't work for everybody. That's what people need to understand. I am very much in favor of limiting meat consumption though, but eliminating it completely isn't always a viable option for some people.
