COOOK 76,406
Natalie Portman wore a dress that featured a cape with the names of female directors that were snubbed at this year's Academy Awards. Rose McGowan shared a lengthy post on Facebook criticizing Portman's activism on Tuesday (February 11): Spoiler "Some thoughts on Natalie Portman and her Oscar ‘protest.’ The kind of protest that gets rave reviews from the mainstream media for its bravery. Brave? No, not by a long shot. More like an actress acting the part of someone who cares. As so many of them do. I find Portman’s type of activism deeply offensive to those of us who actually do the work. I’m not writing this out of bitterness, I am writing out of disgust. I just want her and other actresses to walk the walk. Natalie, you have worked with two female directors in your very long career- one of them was you. You have a production company that has hired exactly one female director- you. What is it with actresses of your ilk? You ‘A-listers’ (🤮) could change the world if you’d take a stand instead of being the problem. Yes, you, Natalie. You are the problem. Lip service is the problem. Fake support of other women is the problem. As I wrote in my book Brave, what goes on behind the screen, goes onscreen, goes into the world. And it’s a pervasive sickness that needs its own medicine. What you do affects the world, Natalie. As does what you do not do. I am singling you out because you are the latest in a long line of actresses who are acting the part of a woman who cares about other women. Actresses who supposedly stand for women, but in reality do not do much at all. Of course women in the world will keep buying the perfumes you promote, the movies you make, and think they’re buying into who you are. But who are you? I was at a Women in Film event that you spoke at once, Natalie. You reeled off depressing statistics and then we all went back to our salads. I quickly realized you and the other women speakers (and that joke of an organization) are just... frauds. You say nothing, you do nothing. There is no law that says you need to hire women, work with women, or support women. By all means, you do you. But I am saying stop pretending you’re some kind of champion for anything other than yourself. As for me, I’ll be over here raising my voice and fighting for change without any compensation. That is activism. Until you and your fellow actresses get real, do us all a favor and hang up your embroidered activist cloak, it doesn’t hang right. RM" Portman responded to McGowan's post in a statement to E! News on Wednesday (February 12): "I agree with Ms. McGowan that it is inaccurate to call me 'brave' for wearing a garment with women's names on it. Brave is a term I more strongly associate with actions like those of the women who have been testifying against Harvey Weinstein the last few weeks, under incredible pressure." "It is true I've only made a few films with women," she confessed. "In my long career, I've only gotten the chance to work with female directors a few times. I've made shorts, commercials, music videos and features with Marya Cohen, Mira Nair, Rebecca Zlotowski, Anna Rose Holmer, Sofia Coppola, Shirin Neshat and myself. Unfortunately, the unmade films I have tried to make are a ghost history." Portman explained that female-directed films are harder to get financed, chosen at festivals, distribution and accolades. She attributes these struggles to the "gatekeepers at every level." "So I want to say, I have tried, and I will keep trying. While I have not yet been successful, I am hopeful that we are stepping into a new day," she concluded. Wixson 5,004
It's awful what she's been through, but the sis should seek more help and try to get a job instead of jumping on every viral tweet and making a war out of it.
Didymus 34,380
Hmm. I get her sentiment and applaud her for trying to wake people up out of the way too inoffensive "let's praise a celebrity for doing 0,000001% of what can be done and what is being done by other people" trend but I'm not sure if she handled this the right way It's hard to tell someone else they "don't really care" about an issue like this, so I don't think it's right to spread that accusation without really knowing for sure. Calling Natalie part of the problem is a bit too far imo. She could've been like "hey, nice dress, but let's not use this as an excuse to think we're already there and we don't need to make bigger changes—we can do this and this, and there's this organization,...", it doesn't need to be so hostile. But like I said: I understand.

Galagala 4,618
Kind of agree tbh Sick of these "woke" Hollywood stars delivering political speeches or things like this to act like they really know what's happening in the world and that they are more noble than us to tell us what we should do. Plz take practical actions to solve problems you only mention in your public speeches and leave award shows to be entertaining again.
illySpencer 1,434
Rose said the truth. Natalie never worked with a woman, even in her own compagny. This is clearly a shame for a woman who says that she stand with them...

Guest
She's right, actions speak louder than words. Most A Listers are fake and mostly care about the popularity contest, they now know since maybe 2014 that the best way is to preach about inequality, climate change (Id say Joaquin truly cares, as for Leo he's a hypocrite) etc... They disgust me. As a kid I used to admire them, now I pity them, they are beautiful shells with nothing inside of it. Make your movies and shut up, it's better than pretending Biggest hypocrite of all would also be Meryl Streep, not to mention Jennifer Lawrence who would be very touchy touchy with Weinstein and praise him in a very odd way (rumors are that she slept with him for roles and all that success she had overnight) to then bashing him suddenly in talk shows. Oh give me a break
Ally Campana 15,284
I actually agree with Rose on this one. So many Hollywood actors and celebs ya like are just riding the wave of wokeness without actually taking any action. Does it matter? Damage is done

The argument of "I tried but nothing happen" is clearly bullshit. There are plenty of bankable female in hollywood, but she chose to not work with them. SHALLOW 16,452
I honestly kinda agree, i don’t think what Natalie did was that impactful except for few articles being written about that dress i wouldn’t attack her like Rose did but i do feel that feminists need to do more than that if they want to be taken seriously
