I saw this but I thought it was an exaggeration, he actually said the words :rip:

Why is it so hard to NOT piss off your own potential voters?!?!

What is more demoralizing! People arguing with you on twitter over universal healthcare, or the candidate himself telling you off :deadbanana: ?

Oh, you think I'm lying about the minimum wage and average rent prices? ¡Read up on real estate!

I live in one of the smaller towns in East Florida and the average rent here for apartments is approaching $900 a month.

Fun fact: that's over 100 hours of minimum wage work just to meet rent in a lot of places.

Y’all do know that this statement Biden made was a joke, right? It was a John Wayne quote and he’s made it many times before. The room laughed. It was a joke.

Did not know that :flop:

Still kinda abrasive but I take back my Trump statement then :huntyga:

Hm. Maybe a joke, but the optics do kind of write themselves. It's unfortunate that its so believable, because he HAS said rude things to voters that weren't just jokes

I knew it sounded familiar. (Not from Biden, as I don’t follow much about him)  I had a Grandpa that would watch old westerns, maybe I heard it at some point? Lol

You’ve got to remember that the majority of Biden’s voters are older. They’ve probably seen John Wayne movies.

So glad this thread was posted. It really showed how vicious somebody in this thread can be, how they have the gall to act outraged at the idea of national rent control and how they have disdain for the poor. You hate to see it folks.

It's young voters that'll decide this election though so his team better clue him in that us 20-somethings aren't John Wayne stans :poot:

Get two jobs save up like I did and buy a property to rent.

But you have enough money to buy Sanders book at $30. Gimme a break. Also what kind of phone do you have is a it a flip phone or an iPhone? Asking for a friend who knows how to not starve while paying rent.

I never said I wasn't able to afford an iPhone, you're actively avoiding the point. I may be able to afford an iPhone, I may be able to find two jobs and manage my time around them, I may not have a family who I also have to feed with my two jobs, I may have a job that can make me earn more than the minimum wage, but I am not blind and I can obviously see there are people who don't have any of that, and no, it isn't because of them, but because people don't care about poor people because those people are selfish and only care about their own well-being.

Only if they turn out to vote. Traditionally, it’s been older voters and women of color that decide elections.

Yeah, even Gaga knows who John Wayne is.

Rent control backfires

Weve had a serious issue here in Ontario where rent control resulted in rent purpose building contruction to collapse which led to a severe shortage

In the short term for a few years yeah it kept a lid on prices. But over the long term it made things worse.... Recently they relaxed most of the rent control laws and we've seen permits and construction greatly increase

Everyone reacting with LMAOs should understand that policies sometimes meant to accomplish something don't always accomplish what it's intention was at least not without side effects

This is why I'm Centre-Left on economics but not all the way left...

I like the idea of protection for consumers and workers and some redistribution...

But u also can't deny that not every policy works as great as it sounds. Some stuff backfires or has offsetting impacts that on a net basis ends up making things worse

I think ppl should consider the broader scope of everything in more detail rather than automatically supporting a policy just because it sounds like it's on the workers or people's sides

I've had this conversation with some ppl like @Woolfsmck @Florin @Florian I believe and I know some of these ppl don't automatically accept every left wing policy for the same reasons

Intent does not always = actual results

Sometimes you can just see who read a book and who didn't :enigma:

Something not doing as amazingly as planned or even potentially backfiring isn't a reason to not try when the situation is dire. I don't understand the point of this criticism.

Our alternative (the status quo) is much more dystopian than the potential losses of a not 100% successful rent control system.

Finally, opposition on the basis that "X method" didn't work, is unrelated to "Let's try Y method"
